Burns Spur 'Icy Hot Heat Therapy' Recall
Chattem Recalls Icy Hot Heat Therapy Products, Including Samples
By Miranda Hitti
WebMD Medical NewsReviewed by Louise Chang, MDFeb. 11, 2008 -- Chattem Inc. is recalling its Icy Hot Heat Therapy products, including samples, due to reports of burns and skin irritations.

"Chattem is recalling these products because it has received some consumer reports of first, second, and third-degree burns as well as skin irritation resulting from consumer use or possible misuse of these products," states a Chattem news release posted on the FDA's web site.

The recall applies to all lots and all sizes of the following Icy Hot Heat Therapy patches:

Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat -- Back
Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat -- Arm, Neck, and Leg
The recall also includes samples of Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat -- Arm, Neck and Leg that were packaged in yellow and red cartons of 3-ounce Aspercreme Pain Relieving Creme.

If you've got any of the recalled Icy Hot Heat Therapy products, stop using them immediately and throw them out or return them to Chattem.

The recall only applies to Icy Hot Heat Therapy products -- not to Aspercreme or other Chattem products.

For refund information, or to get answers to questions about the recall, call Chattem's Consumer Affairs Department at (888) 458-3487 or (888) 442-4464 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or visit Chattem's web site.

In its news release, Chattem says it's committed to the integrity and safety of its products.

1. I accidentally put Icy Hot on my - ahem - unmentionable parts once
I can laugh now because it's over, but it was pretty painful, let me tell you (I'd just done a stair climb and I took a hot bath and put Icy Hot on my legs, and just, ah, missed a little bit). Oh, the agony!

2. Try that after chopping jalapenos.
To this day my wife and I still laugh about the day I had... a bit of an itch... about 10 minutes after making a batch of salsa.

:hurts:
