Am I the only one sick of reading people personally insult each other on this board? |
|
Can people just say they disagree without accusing each other of being stupid or not a scientist or worse?
Can we post opinions about the posts and not personal insults? This I fear is the wrong wingnuts' long term impact on all of us. To turn us into them.
I come to DU to read and to practice trying to communicate by writing ( not too good at it yet, I am afraid). I think that many people here are quite well informed about many different things and I appreciate learning a bit about each of your worlds.

To me, they're trashing the temple.
I wouldn't put that so strongly except that it's not aimed at any particular person, since I honestly don't recall which individuals' posts I found most offensive/upsetting/destructive

You're not the only one who's sick of it.
MANY can post opinions and not personal insults, but many apparently can't.
Did you mean to post this in the Health forum?
Welcome to DU! :hi: -- There's a lot of good among the icky stuff.

I have been a member here for almost two years. As you can tell by my post count I read more than I write. It use to be so much nicer here. Hopefully it will go back to that soon.

7. Yes...But No Matter Who They Want To Win.... |
|
They really are just plain sick of what is going on in this country right now. They are sick of the * years, so much so, that they truly want to win and start purging the bad karma out of the White House and cleanse it with a winner, someone who will actually care for all the people in this great country. I am hoping that once the Dem choice is decided that cooler heads will prevail and once again will work together to work against the other side!

9. No. Insults are a waste of time when debating or making a |
|
point. I stick with the truth as I know it. There are people that take that as an insult because the truth can be wilting at times. I have been wrong at times and have been called on it. I have found throughout my life that you learn more from being wrong and making a mistake then learning what the truth is.:dem:

I'm sick of it too, and quite honestly I've engaged in it myself. I know that tempers can run hot, especially when dealing with certain individuals, but I think we could all deal with taking a deep breath before posting.

12. No. I find some of the topics in this forum very interesting, but ... |
|
I hate reading through them because of the insults. My experience with people who are well-informed on a topic is that they don't have to resort to personal insults. They have enough knowledge to decisively refute claims that are incorrect.

It's even more unpleasant for those of us being insulted, and at times there is a temptation to respond in kind. I do try to avoid giving in to that.

I have been insulted and it is simply awful. I don't really want to post too much as a result, and this is then caving to the bully's.
Thanks, everyone for your comments; I feel a bit better.

After all, it is just a message board. No need to give in to the bullies--- they can't do anything but yap and be annoying. I think some find a lot of jollies from trying to get away with being as obnoxious as possible without getting their posts removed. Really, really a terrible idea to let people like that keep you from stating your opinion.
I actually think a lot can be learned from the bullies--notice their particular persuasion and you will understand what I mean.

18. I sold all my horses many years ago and only have wool sheep these days |
|
I come in from feeding them, growing hay for them, growing heirloom grain and special feed for the old ones with worn teeth. Then I care for the lambs and the pasture and work on this very exciting native plant restoration project that the USDA NRCS (formerly the Soil Conservation Service) is doing on my hills so that I can start the rotational grazing. Then I make lots of work phone calls and fill orders on my mail order business pay bills, organize manufacturing of fiber into yarn and when I get a minute I read up on posts on DU, my sit around unproductive time.
I guess being around sheep night and day (did I mention that I go out at night and check on the ewes who will be giving birth soon?) has turned me sheepish.
I do not consider courtesy and respect for people to be riding a high horse either.
I sincerely think that the rude republican talking heads have permeated the culture and that we all become like them when we insult each other personally.

Which is why I wanted to ask the person who accused some of us of being totalitarian fascists how she felt justified in pretending to be noble and above it all.
Emotions run high in here because of the forum's topic. Health. It's a damn serious issue, and giving or taking the wrong advice can lead to REAL and SERIOUS consequences. Some folks (like myself) think that claims should be judged based on their merits, and the amount of science behind them. Others don't. And when those who don't, accuse those of us who do of being on big pharma's payroll or a Bush admin shill, well, you can imagine why that might be a little upsetting.

I will say that those personal attacks that do happen on this board are an indication of the level of maturity of the person resorting to them. Ignore them and stick to the issue at hand.
