interesting idea i saw on two other website forums. since about ninety eight percent of human infections seem to come from birdfarms, shutting them all down for three years would give researchers time to get a vaccine and a cure
The choice seems to be---
the minor economic jolt of no birdfarms, vs.
the chaos of pandemic. Whole states quarantined, empty grocer shelves, blackouts, banks closed, no petrol ... all due to frighteded employees staying home from jobs at the power plant, bank, grocery etc.
Boycott would close down birdfarms.
Objection--- "But birdflu will likely reach the US by human travellers, so our birdfarms are not a problem".
Answer... One -- To get the main problem birdfarms closed, those in Nam , china, indonesia... , it would be helpful to spread the idea by setting an example.
2. If our birdfarms actually do fall victim of the small chance of a birdflu outbreak, what are the odds that the Bush government will act decisively and shut down infected farms with adequate speed?
Reflect on how he handled past disasters... Did not use massive force to go after osama, used that on Iraq instead... Let the Superdome go five days with no water as the nation watched in horror {"culling the herd" of weaklings is the Neocon mindset, even when the spotlight is on}... Last season's massive flushot shortage, and still, spot shortages this season... Deregulation allowed the Northeast blackout and the Enron-planned artificial California blackout... and the ongoing disaster of homelessness deaths , totally ignored by Bush and the MSM. Feeble stockpiling of Tamiflu against birdflu. Feeble planning for the economic chaos of pandemic.
If a boycott shuts down birdfarms now, then bush will not be able to fumble the ball in his usual style.
Of course our birdfarmers and those in the Orient should be compensated for losses, and given new jobs. Bush can be trusted to compensate our factory farms. A new UN fund should be created to help the Oriental birdfarmers. Very small seed flocks should be kept to reexpand the flocks, once a cure is found.
Can't we do without fried chicken for a while?
