I, too, could not see what homeopathy was all about at one time.
Ten years ago I was the Dir of a division of the NIH.
We did clinical research at the Univ of Penn. #2 in the nation in research funding at the time.
My Aunt tried to tell me about the virtues of homeopathy.
I chuckled. After all, I was I thought, on the cutting edge of medicine. Gene therapy yada, yada, yada.....
It had to be all about large double blind, placebo controlled, cross over studies..............
Then I found out that I had advanced breast cancer. Everything changed.
And, I began to listen. I began to see.
You see...my great,great grandfather was Constantine Hering, MD- the Father of Homeopathy in America.
As a young medical student, in Germany in 1820's, he cut his hand during surgery and developed gangrene. He was told that his hand would have to be cut off.
At the time, Samuel Hahnemann,MD was preaching homeopathy far and wide in Germany (Saxony). A fellow student, suggested to my grandfather that he try a homeopathic remedy for his gangrenous hand rather than face losing his hand for good. He did, and regained full use of his hand. He became very enthused re: homeopathy.
He went on to land a good job assisting a renowned surgeon by the name of Robbi. As it happened, the King of Saxony did not want to hear anything about homeopathy, and commissioned Dr. Robbi to write a paper refuting homeopathy. Dr. Robbi was too busy and so gave this task to his young assistant, Dr. Hering.
Well, my grandfather was very excited about homeopathy. He wrote in his journal: "We shouted it (ie, homeopathy) from every table top...my god, we seemed to be able to raise the dead!"
So, my grandfather completed his paper on homeopathy for the King.
Needless to say the King was not to happy with his assessment. So, the King sent grandfather to head up a long zoological expedition to Suriname- to get him out of the country.
Once in Suriname, Dr. Hering, began to do 'provings' on every plant he could find. He studied homeopathy non stop. The King got word of this, and sent a letter ordering my grandfather to stop practicing homeopathy immediately or risk never being able to set foot in Germany again.
Dr. Hering refused and spent seven more years in Suriname. He eventually set sail for Phila so that he could help cure those stricken with yellow fever. More than 200 0f his specimens are on display at the Academy of Natural Sciences. All of his works are still in publication.
Once in Phila. he founded Hahnemann Hospital in the name of his teacher, Samuel Hahnemann. He gave his entire life to homeopathy.
I used to wonder why. How silly it all seemed to me.
Now I know. I left the US so that I could receive what I needed to get over stage III breast Ca.
Five weeks late, my cancer was gone.
That was 10 years ago this Sept.
My children, now 11 and 15, have never taken an antibiotic. And, trust me they have been sick.
Homeopathy has NEVER let them down.
Every day, I am thankful that I have homeopathy when the avg BS treatments doled about by most doctors don't do very much.
btw, our pediatrician left the group practice to practice ONLY homeopathy five years ago. When I asked her what made her leave the practice She said, "There was so little we had to offer (the children)."
