1 year, 139 pounds lost (and counting)
http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081121/LIFESTYLES07/311219931/-1/LIFESTYLES

"Like many of us, Tracey Bemis, 41, of Lawrence Park used food to deal with the stresses in her life. A series of events -- from a failed first marriage to the death of her father and the loneliness of moving far away from her family and friends -- left Bemis with more than 100 pounds of extra weight.

After losing two brothers, both at age 46 (one to a diabetic heart attack and one two years later to Lou Gehrig's disease), Bemis knew things had to change."

1. If I lost that much
I'd be almost invisible - reduced to the size of frog.

10. It's almost imcomprehensible, isn't it?
139 pounds--that's a whole person! But then again, if dieting were merely a matter less eating and more exercising, we'd all be skinny.

14. That's not quite true
There are conditions and medications that cause weight gain and plenty of diseases that reduce exercise tolerance.

There are usually good reasons people are fat that don't always have to do with sloth and gluttony.

2. I most certainly hope
you are not engaging in fat-baiting, which seems to be the latest bloodsport on DU.

Clever. Health story in health forum. The ignore feature comes in handy if you want to put your head in the sand.

5. That's precisely it -- thanks for pointing it out
And why I'm putting him on ignore. I left that kind of social interaction on school playgrounds many years ago. But the grown up kids seem to wish to persist. :eyes:

6. Fat discrimination is the last acceptable form of prejudice.
It's sad to see it on DU. I think many of these folks must have deep-seated insecurities or eating disorders themselves to be so judgemental.

15. Yes, I'm 6 ft 180 lbs BMI under 24
And it takes time and effort to maintain. Nobody said it is easy. I'm 45 in two weeks and can beat most people half my age in a 5km race.

16. BMI is a BS measure promoted by the big insurance companies.
My husband has a high BMI and low body fat because he's a weight lifter and built like a football player. It's a crap measurement that is not a true indicator of health.

7. no fat-baiting here ....

The OP is not passing judgment on over-weight people. This article is on the facts about obesity, and one person's story.

So much of the obesity phenomena is rooted in genetics and hard-wired psychological mindsets that are very hard to change. Society celebrates people who have lost all that weight, and assume that if only those other obese people had a little self-control and discipline, they could do the same. WRONG. It is not that simple. I know. I've been fighting obesity all my life, and it's taken a toll on my health. Losing weight is very very very difficult; it pisses me off no end when people who have never been in that situation pass judgement on the obese. They have no idea how hard it is, and I wish they'd just shut the hell up. And what infuriates me even more are obese people who have lost weight, then take on a holier-than-thou attitude that implies that other obese people are weak and unmotivated. That's such rubbish. Every person is different, and handles obesity differently. NO ONE has the right to pass judgment.

At the same time, no one should be accused of 'fat-baiting' simply for presenting the factual medical aspects of obesity.

9. It looks like we have to limit posts in the Health Forum now!
No diet, exercise, alcohol, or drug posts please. All of them have the potential to being upsetting to someone. This place has gone nuts. A week ago the Health Forum was tucked safely in the bowels of DU, unlikely to draw fire from anyone. And now every sad sack at the site has to check. I for one appreciate the health suggestions presented here.

18. I suspect something more sinister
Such as a mental disturbance stemming from an obese parent.

He obviously thrives by pissing off others.

So there can be no doubt that he is disturbed by something.

The OP did not trash overweight folks.

The article starts with words of inclusive encouragement, ""Like many of us,.."

I'm officially 'way' overweight but am NOT offended in the least.

22. Almost everything on here is a pointless flamewar anyway.
It's hard to shift through all the garbage to find the occasional post that actually has interesting and helpful information. And hardly anyone ever posts to those threads anyway, so they sink like stones.

that makes you fair game, especially if the person you insulted is someone whose opinion I value.
