Baby Deaths After Indian Drug Trials Sparks Ethical Debate
An inquiry has been launched after 49 babies died in an Indian hospital after clinical trials involving foreign drug companies.

Child drug trials lack safety checks

Just 2% of child drug trials use independent safety checks which can lead to the early detection of adverse drug reactions, a major new review has found.

Researchers from the University of Nottingham carried out a detailed analysis of 739 international child drug trials published between 1996 and 2002. They wanted to see what safety measures were in place to monitor levels of adverse drug reactions.

They found that while 74% of the trials stated that safety monitoring was performed during the study, just 2% - that is 13 of the 739 – actually had independent safety monitoring committees.

A Bitter Pill
Exporting Drug Trials to the Developing World

"The Kano patients didn't know they were being enrolled into a for-profit study. It is absolutely abhorrent that you can use sick children as guinea pigs without informed consent," says Elaine Kusel, the legal partner handling the case at Milberg Weiss in New York.

Whoever triumphs in the lawsuit, the Trovan affair is just one of several cases from the past decade that have begun to expose the secretive, ethically fraught nature of the pharmaceutical business and the globalization of human experimentation.

1. See, even if you have no money, you are still of use to the corporations.
Those murderers, they sound like Nazis experimenting on jewish people.

Is there nothing too abhorrent for a corporation to profit from?
