Alzheimer's Prevented And Reversed With Natural Protein In Animal Models
ScienceDaily (Feb. 9, 2009) — Memory loss, cognitive impairment, brain cell degeneration and cell death were prevented or reversed in several animal models after treatment with a naturally occurring protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The study by a University of California, San Diego-led team – published in the February 8, 2009 issue of Nature Medicine – shows that BDNF treatment can potentially provide long-lasting protection by slowing, or even stopping the progression of Alzheimer's disease in animal models.

Snip

The demonstration of the effectiveness and safety of BDNF administration in animals provides "a rationale for exploring clinical translation" to humans, the team concludes, suggesting that the protective and restorative effects of BDNF on damaged neurons and neuronal signaling may offer a new approach to treating Alzheimer's disease.

3. So one type of protein causes the damage, and another fixes it.

And the damaging protein can be reduced by drinking apple juice:

Much cheaper.

6. Did you notice it is also science daily.
Did you read this:

Dr. Shea commented that "These findings provide further evidence linking nutritional and genetic risk factors for age-related neurodegeneration and suggest that regular consumption of apple juice can not only help to keep one's mind functioning at its best, but may also be able to delay key aspects of Alzheimer's disease and augment therapeutic approaches."

7. Yes I did.
But that doesn't change two facts:

1) The effect is only seen in mice. Do you have any idea how many treatments have had fantastic results with lab animals, only to fail miserably with humans?

2) Even the article itself doesn't say apple juice is a cure - only that it seems to reduce the formation of the plaques, thus delaying the onset of the disease.

Don't get me wrong - this is encouraging news and worthy of much more study. I really hope it pans out. However to go implying that drinking your apple juice every day will cure/prevent Alzheimer's is a bit irresponsible.

8. I did not say cure.
I said the damaging protein can be REDUCED. Don't put words in my mouth.

Apple juice is way better than Coke, Pepsi, etc.

9. Didn't accuse you of saying it.
I said the damaging protein can be REDUCED. Don't put words in my mouth.

I didn't. I qualified that we only know the protein appears to be reduced in mice. Do you acknowledge this?

Apple juice is way better than Coke, Pepsi, etc.

True, but most fruit juices aren't fantastic - they concentrate the sugar and eliminate the fiber.

10. Your words:
"drinking your apple juice every day will cure/prevent Alzheimer's is a bit irresponsible"

I quoted a doctor who said it would be a good idea to drink apple juice - he did imply it was not restricted to mice.

But I agree on the juice part, probably eating apples is better.

12. Why did you neglect to include some of those words?
My complete sentence:
However to go implying that drinking your apple juice every day will cure/prevent Alzheimer's is a bit irresponsible.

Your first post clearly implied that just drinking apple juice would do the same thing as the effect noted in the OP. "Much cheaper" is what you said.

14. Look, first you misunderstand me.
Then you misquote me to justify your misunderstanding. And yet you still don't understand the difference between SAYING and IMPLYING something.

Good luck to you.

4. Potential Alzheimer's breakthroughs like this need to get fast-tracked.
So many people and families are being affected by this. If I had it, I'd certainly risk death to be helped. I'm sure there are tens of thousands of other people who would feel the same way.

11. maybe this will be better tolerated than Aricept is in some patients
We tested Aricept on my mother, but it made her very very sick.
To the point of NOT eating at all, and staying in bec 24 X 7.

Unfortunately, she did not tolerate it well.

Some people don't.

We should always seek new and better ways to address health issues,
and we should continue to research these issues.
