Virus 'triggers child diabetes'
A common virus may be the trigger for the development of many cases of diabetes, particularly in children, UK researchers have reported.

Signs of enteroviruses were found in pancreatic tissue from 60% of children with type 1 diabetes, but in hardly any children without the disease.

They also found that 40% of adults with type 2 diabetes had signs of the infection in insulin-producing cells.

The study published in Diabetologia raises the possibility of a vaccine.

4. A possible vaccination for diabetes, especially type 1? That is tremendous
I really hope this turns out to be something. It would make a significant change in health care costs and quality of life for so many people.

7. Unless the virus can create the same immune response that leads
to diabetes to begin with?

It's a great discovery none the less.

The mods have a habit of of moving stuff to correct forums so I thought I might as well post it direct here. It was actual news in the UK at this time yesterday and I noticed this morning UK time the BBC had posted it in their health news section.

12. The methodology
seems almost bullet proof and I hope they're right in their finding. So yes - maybe they shouldn't have said maybe.
