Poll question: How should single payer health coverage be paid for?
Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 12:29 PM by county worker
By single payer I mean that the federal government is the only payer. There would be no insurance companies. All health care providers would be reimbursed for their services by the federal government.

Everyone is covered and all get the same level of care.

10. That depends on the country
In some provinces of Canada, the health insurance is funded from general tax revenues, with no direct premium charged to the covered individual.

In other provinces, general tax revenues provide the bulk of the funding, but people are required to pay a premium for their health insurance.
Note that even in the provinces where a premium is required, the person is automatically covered regardless of whether the premium is
paid or not, as long as he is a resident of the province and he is either a Canadian citizen or legal permanent resident of Canada.
There are premium rebates for people with low income. A person who qualifies for coverage and who is not eligible for a rebate
will find his premiums added to his income tax bill once its discovered that he hasn't been paying the premium.

2. I voted incorrectly, I think.
I think it needs to be a special tax like Social Security with a progressive rate. We need to know "this" deduction is for my family's healthcare. And everyone participates. I don't care if you're making minimum wage - even a dollar a week says you're vested in the program.

6. That will only pay for a small part of it.
Everyone should contribute a little more (individuals, corporations, small businesses, cuts in military spending, etc.).
