Day three of Neti Pot therapy.. So far so good
I originally bought one to help clear my ears, but I'm really enjoying being able to breath out of both nostrils for the first time in my life. I also now know that getting pool water up my nose isn't a big deal, although I'm sure the chlorine isn't all that good for the sinuses.

These things should be as popular as tooth brushes. Fits in with my view that taking drugs for every minor issue is probably not a good idea.

5. I'd really like to know why doctors don't prescribe them.
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 12:46 PM by tridim
Instead they prescribe drugs that are a precursor to Methamphetamine, that IMO don't work very well and the side-effects make you feel really dried out and yucky.

The neti pot makes my head feel clear and clean. No side-effects at all.

I bet these things would work wonders for migraine sufferers.

Menthol (Nasal Mist). I have chronic sinus problems, compounded with a deviated septum. Two failed nose surgeries after injury in an auto accident many years ago left me with problems breathing through the nose.

This stuff has been the best I have ever used and believe I've tried everything. Not up to using the pot however. Somehow the picture bothers me.

Oops, replied to wrong poster, should have been #2 but since we're all friends.....

4. I just enjoy the funky stuff that comes out when I do mine.
Cleared up my sinus infections STAT.

I use a saline pump though. None of that ceramics stuff.

7. Is the pump made of plastic?
Does it have chemicals other than salt in it?

8. Yes plastic and it was prescribed so I do believe it does have something more than salt.
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 12:54 PM by YOY
Most of the chemicals I recognized as Sodium related or non-hazardous.

The plastic helps tp pump out the severe congestion. I am sure the ceramic serves it's purpose but I really needed to (not painfully or damagingly) force it out. Plus I'd fear breaking the thing.

It was, to taste, (as it could be tasted in my mouth afterwards) basically warm saline water and nothing more.

Really easy to use, and I am convinced the xylitol in it does something extra.

For neti pots. However, I have not tried that, just the spray stuff. I'm extremely pleased with it.

12. I also use one...
I was told I needed sinus surgery about 2 years ago due to the numerous incidents of Sinusitis, but my great fear of surgery left me no choice but to buy a neti-pot. I LOVE it. I have not had another sinus infection since I started using the device. If I start to feel a little congested I just go to the bathroom and use my Neti and feel relief. Great product I would and do suggest to anyone that will listen.

Also, if one has a deviated septum would it still work?

17. The box says it's good for allergies.
No idea about the deviated septum thing, but my guess is that the fluid would seek the deviation hole instead of filling the sinus. That would defeat the purpose.

15. Am I the only one who finds these extremely painful?
I suffer from severe seasonal allergies and frequent sinus infections from the poor air quality in my work place. At my doctor's recommendation, I tried one of these Neti Pots, and it felt like I was searing my brain with hydrochloric acid and ammonia. I felt great after each usage, but the pain caused headaches that were worse than the sinus headaches I did have.

I use a prescription nasal spray that works just as well without all the pain.

20. Maybe I was mixing the solution wrong
I may pull it out and try again; it's been the worst season for allergies I've experienced in my entire life and a little relief might help.

22. I use the Ayr pump instead of the neti pot
and it comes with little packets of saline to mix in the water. Does the neti pot come with anything like that?

23. It's been quite a while since I used it
but I remember a bottle of solution that I had to mix with water, and I think I purchased it separately.

Could the water I use cause the pain?

24. The salt
is added to make a saline mixture. Without the salt, chlorinated water will cause the burning you describe. Yes. It's the (wrongly prepared) water.

25. I do that with a plastic syringe.
About five cc's with warm saline in it. No needle of course.

I do this: Fill up syringe with warm saline water. Lean head back. Close one nostril with finger; open mouth.
Squirt fluid up non-finger-blocked side, swallow or spit out.
Lean over, blow nose.
Repeat on other side.
