Michelle's Remission of Type 1 Diabetes by Eliminating Grain, Dairy, and Legumes
Interesting..........

http://michellestype1diabetes.blogspot.com/

On May 16, 2008 I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 20. I had all the classic symptoms of thirst and weight loss, tested positive for all the autoantibodies and had an AlC of 14%.

On January 8, 2009 I eliminated grain, dairy, and legumes from my diet and the results have been remarkable. Only after a few weeks my insulin needs dropped dramatically and after six months on the diet I quit taking insulin altogether.

I am writing this blog because I want other type 1 diabetics to know about the benefits of the diet. It's helped me and I believe it could help others. I will be posting about my progress on the diet, lab results (such as AlC's, autoantibodies, C-peptide), research studies and articles about type 1 diabetes, and recipes.

Thanks for posting it.
added: my CARDIOLIGIST recommended a very similar diet for me - I was having a hard time sticking to it, but I will make a better effort because of this post.

4. I am type II. I used to take tons of insulin. Now I don't take any.

Basically I keep non-vegetable carbs (grains, fruits) around 50 to 100 grams a day.

Come to think of it I hardly ever eat dairy and don't eat legumes either.

So Michelle is definitely on to something.

5. I'm very skeptical of this.
I might take her word for it if it were Type II, but Type I?

6. I think now we realize that there are different kinds of Type 1s
Obviously, this won't work for everybody.

Do you realize that some neonatal Type 1s are now doing well on Type 2 medications?

Seriously..........

8. Insulin is all about carbs
Those of us who wear pumps know that we can cut way back on insulin if we eliminate carbs.

But a type 1 taking NO insulin? This will lead to death.

10. I works very well

It's a great diet for not having to worry about your weight either. It's *very* hard to be overweight if you maintain a paleo diet. Not that you are counting calories, it's just that w/o the carbs you dont put on the weight.

The Paleo diet is based upon eating foods that humans evolved to eat from the Paleolithic era (2,000,000 years ago) up to the advent of agriculture (10,000 years ago). The diet includes:

* Fruits
* Vegetables
* Nuts
* Seeds
* Seafood
* Lean meats
* Eggs

11. I cut out most dairy a few years ago, but still eat cultured dairy.
Is that okay? My gut just can't handle lactose.

12. Goats milk is fine for lactose intolerant
and is far healthier. The molecular structure is smaller, closer to human milk and much easier for the body to assimilate. I have just found a local source for it so will also be making my own yogurt and cream cheese too.
