My kidney stone experience |
|
Edited on Mon Sep-21-09 06:03 PM by Christa
Having no insurance I just had to bite the bullet and pass them without pain medication or going to the ER.
I started feeling vaguely sick at about 7-8 pm Saturday night, pain and cramps my lower back and abdomen which became progressively much worse.
It turned out to be kidney stones trying to work their way out. To me it was a milestone event, burned into my mind.
I was awake most of the night, I moved into the guest bedroom not to bother my husband (but more because I hate a pity party), and at one stage I was literally hanging over the bed, leaning on it as I could not be horizontal, nor could I be vertical. I was having chills and sweat was pouring down me and I thought: This cannot get worse.
Then it got worse and I kept seeing waves of blackness rolling over me as the throbbing, pounding, blinding pain consumed me and I dry heaved into a bucket.
Worst night of my life, ever. Worse than childbirth as each spasm continued for many minutes only to start again after a short while, for about 18 hours non stop.
I kept feeling the urge to pee and every time I went there was lot which surprised my as I was feeling too sick to drink anything. It turned out the stones activated my kidneys to produce more urine to rinse the stones out.
They eventually passed but I don't wish it on my greatest enemy.
Edited a typo.

1. Awful. Hope you are better. |
|
How far along did you realize it was kidney stones? It could have been worse. I hope you take steps to avoid them in the future.

I was googling the symptoms and realized it was kidney stones when all my symptoms correlated and when I saw the small (almost like dried peas), I knew.

maintaining proper hydration might curb their occurrence I have heard.

9. Same thing with gallstones |
|
But it was the burst ovarian cyst that sent me to the hospital in the middle of the night. Thankfully (?) I have insurance.

Thank you very much for explaining why I'll go get some narcotics before I try to pass kidney stones without medical help. : )

7. If you want some real fun, try having a stone blocking the outlet of your bladder. |
|
You can't do more than a dribble, plus all the other fun you had. If you haven't yet, go see a doctor to find out what is causing them. With me it was the sodium in the salt leaching the calcium from my bones. You'd better believe I look at the salt content of the food I buy. Lots of stuff stays on the shelf. Even stuff that you would think would not have any or very much salt is loaded. It's ridiculous.

17. See a doctor it you can. |
|
There are two kinds of kidney stones, calcium and urine crystals. You need to know which kind you have. google has a lot of information, but you still need to be tested to find the cause.

I hopped around on a broken ankle all weekend waiting for an urgent care to open because I couldn't afford the ER. I needed the X ray to make sure the fracture would set correctly and I lucked out there.
This is what having no insurance means. It means we can't get timely help or even help, at all.
This is why our system is just plain reeking, fulminating EVIL.

I was ready to die as I did not know when it would stop, or if it was going to get even worse.

I've had kidney stones twice within 6 years. You really should have gone to emergency because if a stone is blocking you could lose a kidney. I had one that was 1 m. and it had to be bombarded. It was blocking the kidney. Only people who have had stones realize the pain they cause. I feel sorry for you but aleast its passed. Try an over the counter pain killer like motran. The emergency room once gave me a strong motran and it worked.
