Regular flu shots may make you more susceptible to Swine Flu?
Edited on Sat Sep-26-09 09:31 AM by leftyladyfrommo
I saw this somewhere but I don't remember if it was in the paper or on the net or where. Anyone else see this?

I don't know whether to get flue shots this year. I really haven't much in the past. And I'm 61 so I'm in the low risk group for swine flu.

1. Apparently not.
U.S. Swine Flu Vaccinations Start Oct. 6
(WebMD Health News, September 25, 2009)

(CDC Director Thomas) Frieden urged people not to wait for the H1N1 swine flu vaccine, but to get their seasonal flu shots right away. He was asked about reports from Canada of unpublished research suggesting that people who got seasonal flu shots might be more susceptible to swine flu.

We have looked at our data at CDC and our data from New York City from when I was health commissioner. The Australians have already published their data, and in none of these studies is any indication that seasonal vaccination affects the likelihood of getting H1N1," Frieden said. "Nothing we have seen suggests there is a problem."

2. Vaccine Creators Refuse to Take H1N1 Vaccine (Swine Flu Vaccine)
If the inventors of the vaccine refuse to take take, and are advising relatives and friends not to take it, then I'm in no rush to be one of their guinea pigs.

3. i don't believe that those who created the shot are refusing to get it.
the shot is being made just like the regular shot, and had H1N1 appeared a couple months earlier last year, it would have been in the seasonal and we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

4. I say let the anti-vaccine crowd do without. Just leaves more so those of us
who WANT flu vaccines will be able to get them.

There may be a bumper crop of Darwin awards this year due to completely unnecessary flu deaths.

5. Amen to that. Die if they want to. I'm standing in line for my flu shots here in Vermont...

9. It's one thing not to want this particular vaccine ...
but the site curezone is one that pushes all kinds of 'cures' for serious ailments and discourages people from seeking medical attention.

Two of the main writers on this site are Hulda Clark and Richard Schulze. Clark is the author of books with titles like 'The Cure for All Cancers' and 'The Cure for All Diseases'. She attributes all forms of cancer to a flatworm and HIV/AIDS to another parasite and advises people NOT to seek 'conventional' medical help. Schulze also hawks cancer 'cures'; has made claims such as that everyone would have cancer by the year 2000 (obviously, they didn't); that untreated people with cancer survive four times as long as people who use modern medicine (false and dangerous); and that 'God is the Great Physician. In fact, nothing we do physically or emotionally will make any difference unless God provides His power to heal'.

I suspect that this claim about vaccine researchers came from the same source, i.e. up some writer's rear end.

6. This report comes from an UNPUBLISHED Canadian study that has not
been peer reviewed. The Canadian researchers are well respected in their field however no other country has reported a link been the two vacines which is why the US and other countries are not changing their vaccine protocols. Canada however is changing its protocol and is rolling out H1N1 vaccine to the general populace several months prior to regular flu vacine.

I think the media handling of this study has been irresponsible fear-mongering.

7. Yes... small non-reviewed study whose "findings" could readily
be explained by failure to control for confounding factors. For example, if those who received the seasonal flu vaccine mistakenly believed they had received protection against H1N1, they may well have reverted to behaviors that put them at risk--e.g. failing to wash hands regularly, frequenting large crowded events, etc.

Yes, the media handling of this small study has been irresponsible.

8. Absolutely; that occurred to me too.
Also, people who chose to get the seasonal flu vaccine, especially relatively early, may have been people at particular risk for flu in general, either because of health problems, or because they come into a lot of contact with other people at risk for flu. The seasonal flu vaccine would not protect against the swine flu; hence possibly greater likelihood of that group getting it.

10. It has been submitted for peer review.
You make it sound like they are trying to run a scam, and that isn't the case.

11. Nothing in my post implies reseachers running a scam.
My point it that the media has been fear mongering. The media should wait for the study to be reviewed.

12. For the most part, swine flu cases aren't being tested
to see if they ARE swine flu. Therefore, anyone who gets the flu during this flu season may have swine flu or may have just the "regular flu" that comes along every year.
