My personal experience with vitamin D
Just got a call from my ob/gyn with my new vitamin D levels. My baseline was 17. After a few months on 1.25mg of D five days a week (prescription), my level went up to 34. My ob/gyn was pleased and told me to switch to a low-level supplement to maintain this new level; my holistic doc was less impressed, thought it should be higher, and instead recommended 10,000 IUs a day. While I trust my ob/gyn, I trust my holistic doc even more, so I got the higher-level supplements. My recent results after being on 10,000 IUs a day is 87. Ob/gyn is concerned that it's too high, although 87 is in the optimal range I read about most (80 to 100) and wants me to cut back on the supplement. I think I'm gonna go with my holistic doc's advice on this one, when I meet with her next. She'll likely test me again and, if I don't go any higher, will probably tell me to stay on my current supplement.

Physical results: I haven't had even the slightest twinge of a cyst popping since I've been on the 10,000 IU supplement (I'm in a constant battle with PCOS, which is why my midwife wanted to check my D levels to begin with), and I'm very pleased about that. I still catch illnesses from my son, Typhoid MG Jr., but they are fewer and less severe.

Conclusion: So far I'm liking my newly elevated vitamin D level very much. :hi:

1. I've started with the Vit D around mid-summer.
Taking 4000 IU a day and while I can't afford a test to determine my levels, I must say I feel better and (knocking on wood) haven't had as much as a sniffle all fall.

I deal with the public on a large scale in the autumn dealing with our seasonal, holiday sales and always have had at least a cold by now.

Granted, we have been religious in our use of alcohol gels during the public events but I am convinced the Vit D is a great benefit and affordable.

Thanks for your personal report.

2. Interesting. I have family history of heart disease
and high LDL, low HDL, high triglycerides. My father and most of his uncles died in their fifties. Several arteries 90 to 100% blocked. My father was an athlete. Runner, tennis, scuba, golf, bowling, trim and fit. After battling for 10 years with lowfat diets, I had a heart scan done 4 years ago. I was convinced they would put me on Lipitor and send me to get stents. Everything came up zeroes. Not one speck of plaque in my arteries. I have been taking niacin every day for 35 years. I have read that it keeps plaque from collecting in arteries. Saw a recent news report on CNN where they interviewed someone stating this. Drug companies are not pleased, I'm sure. I don't expect to hear much more about it on the tube.

3. That reading is above what a consortium of top Vitamin D reaseachers
Edited on Mon Nov-30-09 07:51 PM by snagglepuss
from universties across Canada and the US are recommending. These researchers who formed the consortium to address world-wide Vitamin D defeciencies recommend serum levels between between 40-60 ng/L.

FYI Canada uses a different unit of measure than what's used in the US. Canada uses nmol, so if you've been reading Canadian or UK articles about recommended serum levels they refer to this different measurement.

87 ng/L is 217.15 nmol

5. I'm currently taking 10K iu...
...and was tested at 72 early last spring. Will likely drop it to 7K iu during summer. At $40 a pop...doubt if I'll be doing more vit D testing. Did recently go thru a mild form of flu or whatever.

If cysts equate to potential cancer...I say you might be OK?
