"The bottom line is we have a 14-year-old who needs a heart and he needs a huge amount of money to be considered for the waiting list," said William Suarez, with Latinos United Now and Always, which is hosting a fundraiser for Eduardo.

Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City has been treating Eduardo for free since July. However, Children's Mercy doesn't perform heart transplants.

Children's Mercy sent Eduardo home in October, but continues to supply the family with medications and provide inpatient and outpatient care for the teen.

Another obstacle the family faces is that Eduardo is an illegal immigrant. His supporters said they're aware of a national climate that might oppose the teen getting help...."
