Nutrient 'Cocktail' Appears to Improve Dementia Symptoms
http://www.businessweek.com/lifestyle/content/healthday/634802.html

A combination of three nutrients might help improve memory in Alzheimer's patients by stimulating the growth of new brain connections (synapses), a new study shows.

Uridine, choline and the omega-3 fatty acid DHA (all found in breast milk) are precursors to the fatty molecules that make up brain cell membranes, which form synapses.

"If you can increase the number of synapses by enhancing their production, you might to some extent avoid that loss of cognitive ability" that occurs in Alzheimer's patients, Richard Wurtman, a professor of brain and cognitive sciences at MIT, said in a news release. He conducted the basic research that led to this investigational treatment.

In a clinical trial, 225 Alzheimer's patients were given a cocktail of the three nutrients, along with B vitamins, phosopholipids and antioxidants. Patients with mild Alzheimer's showed improvements in verbal memory.

2. I had an Alzheimere's patient in my care
back in the early nineties when the Nootropics were the rage.

I would get her to take small amounts of DMAE while she had a small glass of wine.

The improvement would be amazing. We could have company over and she would recognize her friends and follow the conversations. (DMAE is related or part of the Choline molecule.)

At that time, there were no drugs out for use with Alzheimer's patients.

DMAE can be ordered through almost any Health Food store or internet store.

3. Do you remember how much she took?
I have an aunt with Alzhiemer's. She is being cared for by my other aunt, her older sister. She got diagnosed when she was around 57. Right now she can still eat on her own but she has to be bathed, she wears diapers and only says short phrases here and there. She no longer can say complete sentences.

It's so sad to see my once very outgoing, fun aunt like this.

She had a hair salon for years and I have read that people who work in salons can be at higher risk because of all the chemicals they are exposed to. She started working back in the 60's when I am sure the stuff was much stronger than it is now.

I have tried to educate myself all I can about the disease. Risk factors, ways to help prevent, etc. Always trying to find out all I can about it.

4. I am sure it was just the normal dose of DMAE.
One or two tablets, though I don't remember the strength. It is also key to remember tht you do need to talk to a doctotr if your aunt is taking other meds. I don't think that DMAE is an MHO inhibitor, but it's best to talk to her doctor if she is on other meds.

5. Calico1 - here is information from google search

It did make me remember that I built her up over a week to higher doses. (I use a pill crusher to do that, as often vitamins come in higher doses than I like.)

I doubt I ever had her take more than 150 Mg. The web search info follows in BOLD:

DMAE:

Di-Methyl-Amino-Ethanol (DMAE) increases memory, learning and intelligence. It also acts as a pick-me-up without the jitteriness usually associated with caffeine. Naturally present in small amounts in the brain, DMAE affects the brain's levels of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in memory formation and thought processes. It is thought that low doses of DMAE should be used at first, with a gradual build up to 500 mg per day. If taken in doses higher than the body needs, DMAE can cause insomnia, headaches and muscle tension. DMAE is available in Health Food Stores in liquid and pill form. It should be stored in a cool dark place. Contraindications: Those who suffer from depression should not take DMAE.
