1. Penicillin kills the bacteria

That's right, plain old obsolete penicillin. I'd trust that rather than any "new" treatment.

The problem is that by the time that particular bug is discovered, it's been at work on the fascia attaching our skin to our bodies and that means extensive skin grafting will be required over the areas it has attacked, since the skin dies in those areas even after the bugs have been killed.

Mortality is from the effects of having large areas of skin destroyed.
