Institute Of Medicine Report on Supplement Regulation
http://www.theness.com/neurologicablog/?p=1944

"The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is an organization of independent scientists and experts who are tasked with providing, “independent, objective, evidence-based advice to policymakers, health professionals, the private sector, and the public.” In my experience they generally do good work – those IOM reports I have read in areas that I have some knowledge seem to be thorough and objective.

They were recently tasked by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prepare a report on the science behind health claims for food and drugs. Their report is now in, and the results are in accord with my own writings on the topic. They conclude, basically, that there should be a rigorous standard of evidence for not only drugs but also health claims made for food and supplements as well.

Their key points focus on the fact that many food and supplement claims are based upon basic science research – the use of biomarkers instead of clinical outcomes. They point out that extrapolation from biomarkers to health outcomes is problematic, and they outline methods the FDA can use to standardize the use of biomarkers.

...

'“Many people naturally assume that the claims made for foods and nutritional supplements have the same degree of scientific grounding as those for medications, and this committee thinks that should in fact be the case,” said committee chair John Ball, executive vice president, American Society for Clinical Pathology, Chicago.'"

It's time for regulation, for consumer protection. The lack of it in this arena is simply unforgivable.

1. Does this group regulate drugs like Oxycontin?
Or do they just trust big pharma to regulate themselves?

4. I'm not googling some anecdote that you can't bother to link to...
Are you claiming that prescriptions and pharmacies are not regulated? And what does this have to do with needed regulations for claims of supplements and food?

11. If the big money Pharma can not patent it and make money off
of its sales, then they want it controlled so people do not have access to any natural substances that may cut into their profits. They do not want any competition.

That is why a "cure" will never be found for cancer or high blood pressure or any of the other major health problems. That would mean an end to their funds for R & D would cut into their sales of their magic pill of the month.

Also how much money do they make off of the side effects of the drugs they sell now. It is a vicious cycle.

I will say that I have 40 years working in the medical field and big pharma is king.
So you keep your mind closed and plug your ears. Kind of reminds me of tea baggers. Only their opinion matters, only their way is the truth.

Edited on Sat May-15-10 03:52 PM by HuckleB
Further, offering up red herrings about "big pharma" does not mean regulation of big supplement is not needed. Of course, you can't offer up anything that supports your ludicrous conspiracy theory, but...

Somehow you missed those basic realities.

Wake up. Denialism kills.

Further, you refuse to answer the question above. Either you are a pure libertarian, against all regulation, or you are taking a very hypocritical stand on this issue.
