I just heard this story reported on CBC news but haven't been able to find anything about yet online.

Below is a story reported in 2005 when a Canadian biohemistry professor stumbled across shrew salivia as a possible cure for ovarian cancer. The report tonight says colleagues are amazed that it has gotten so far, they are amazed that human trials will start shortly. It is a very strange turn of events.

Mount Allison biochemistry Prof. Jack Stewart had intially investigated shrew salvia because he had a hunch that it might be a possible pain killer. When he got a sample of the toxin, the cells he tested them on were coincidentially overian cancer cells and was shocked when the cells died. That started his research. Anyway that was 6 or 7 years ago and the research has progressed so far that they will shortly begin human testing! Of course it may not pan out but let's keep our fingers crossed.
