So, a friend just had a physical. She had several pre-cancerous
lesions taken off her face and she was put on high dose Vitamin D because her blood levels were too low. This suggests to me that getting all your Vitamin D from sun exposure might be a tricky business these days!

2. Indeed
I've never been a pill-popper, but the one supplement I do take is Vitamin D, since I spend virtually all day indoors or in a car (car windows block UV).

3. I don't think it's off-topic at all, especailly when Vitamin D levels are
increasingly tied to how the body uses glucose.

5. What form of vitamin D was she put on?
Just capsules or tablets like you can purchase at the grocery or health food store? Or was it some kind of prescription? And how high of a dose?

6. Nothing yet, she has to go back for the script. Questions about
dosage should go to your doctor.

8. In the "old" days the recommended dose was 200 IU (about the
same with Vit A, if I recall)because they thought higher doses could be harmful. This doctor (on the site) recommends 5000 IU! I take 2000 in one pill, and again, in the 'old days', such a dose wouldn't have even been available OTC.

6 months and feel great. Better mood all the time. That is Vit D3.

11. However, sun exposure protects against cancer in general ...
though not against skin cancer. It's not all vitamin D.

12. Sunblocks can cause cancer too
There are ingredients in sunblocks that are banned in the products in other countries that the US still allows such as;

Benzophenone-3 or Oxybenzone : Hazard Rating - High

120px-Oxybenzone

Studies made by Centers for Disease Control Research show that this chemical ingredient contaminates 97% of American bodies. It is found to be used as a sunscreen agent, ultraviolet absorber and ultra violet filter in sunscreen SPF 15-30, sunscreen SPF greater than 30, sunscreen moisturizer, sunscreen lip balm and baby sunscreen.

Benzophenone-3 is included among those listed in the Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances. Concerns about this chemical include wildlife and environmental toxicity and its ability to absorb into the skin
and to cause endocrine disruption.

Other studies show that this synthetic chemical suppresses growth, causes leucocytosis, anemia, and can reduce organ weight and both chronic/sub-chronic oral toxicity. There are about 1,388 studies in PubMed science library that may provide data regarding the toxicity of this chemical. There are 1,217 sunscreen and other consumer products that carry these ingredients with hazard ratings that range from moderate to high.
