Does bombing a region precipate earthquakes?

I thought about this last night in connection with the recent earthquake near Islamabad. That's right next door to Afghanistan, and a few years ago, IIRC, there was an earthquake in Afghanistan.

The area is prone to earthquakes, but I wonder if the extensive bombing of Afghanistan with those daisy-cutter bombs, could have helped to "bring it on," in the words of somebody.

1. NO.
The force of even a nuclear weapon is nothing compared to the forces involved in plate tectonics.

2. I was thinking the same thing...
Last night I was wondering about the effects of nuclear testing and bombing on earthquakes.

How synchronous ...

8. Earworm can really suck; Ring of Fire can play for hours in your brain

By June Carter & Merle Kilgore

Love Is A Burning Thing
And It Makes A Fiery Ring
Bound By Wild Desire
I Fell Into A Ring Of Fire

CHORUS:
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

The Taste Of Love Is Sweet
When Hearts Like Ours Meet
I Fell For You Like A Child
Oh, But The Fire Went Wild

CHORUS
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

And It Burns, Burns, Burns

The Ring Of Fire

The Ring Of Fire

4. No.
However, there have been studies on whether a nuclear device sunk down a shaft could force an early release of tension in a fault causing a smaller earthquake rather than the "big one" that might eventually be expected.

But that is not what we are discussing here.

5. I have thought that myself even though the experts claim it isn't so....
they aren't always right.

9. yeah, but they're experts
Which means that they're going on things like "calculations" and "observations" rather than gut feelings about what should or shouldn't be possible.

If you want to present an quantitative argument about how bombing can induce earthquakes, you'll have a good audience in this forum.

6. If you like disaster movies they do!

10. The amount of energy involved
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 09:55 AM by hobbit709
in an earthquake is many orders of magnitude higher than anything we can do. Mt. St. Helens was a wet firecracker as far as volcanic eruptions go and it was the equivalent of a 250 megaton blast. The biggest nuke we set off was about 50 megatons.
