Research Shows Lack of Altruism in Chimps

Morning Edition, October 27, 2005 · While humans may go out of their way to help someone or generally just "do a good deed," research being published in the journal Nature has found that chimpanzees don't have that compulsion. It seems that chimps are indifferent to helping one another, even when helping doesn't require extra effort.

5. It takes a lot of brain power...
...to do a good deed that yields no concrete payoff.

Chimps are much like us in their infighting and juggling of relationships, but I don't think they can take the long view that something like religion or pure altruism requires.
