The Elegant Universe
You can watch the Nova 3-hour miniseries, The Elegant Universe, free online.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/program.html

I'm up to chapter 5 of 8 of Hour 2 (String's the Thing). Scroll down to see the chapter titles in each segment.

This is just what I was hungry for today. I couldn't get "What caused the Big Bang?" off my mind.

An exceptional program.

4. Saw it a few months ago - very well done
As for string theory itself (now known as M-theory), it still has some problems, one of them the lack of any direct evidence. But it's a neat theory nonetheless.

7. I liked the book better than the miniseries.
Not that the miniseries wasn't good. It's just that the book brought up so many new lines of thought in me that I needed to stop, ponder them, and reassemble my mental pictures before reading on. No time to do that while watching a show on TV. (No Tivo here :( )
