November 17, 2008 - The Leonids Meteor Showers and Viewing Tips
Edited on Sun Nov-16-08 03:57 AM by Dover

The Leonids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Tempel-Tuttle.

The 2008 Leonids are expected to be at their best in the wee hours before dawn Monday morning, November 17. But the bright waning gibbous moon will obscure much of it.

Scientists believe that there will be a major outburst between 12:01 AM and 12:30 AM Universal Time.

5. I took my grandmother to watch the Leonids in 1999
It was one of the big 33-year outburst cycle episodes. There were about 2000 meteors per hour that night -- more than one meteor visible at a time.

She had just turned 87, but she was completely thrilled, like a child.
