"As many of you know, this is the column that scientists most enjoy reading when they are not reading columns about actual science. That's partly because I never make fun of scientists, and they appreciate it, because lots of people do, including many of the bureaucrats currently in charge of government-funded scientific endeavors.

Also, scientists can find nits to pick and questions to which they know the answer. Since mostly they deal with questions to which they do not know the answer - that's kind of the point - it's refreshing to find public queries from confused laymen that they can knock out of the park."
