Question about Bromthymol blue |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 10:49 PM by DustMolecule
My daughter is doing a science project about global warming/greenhouse gases. We ordered some bromthymol blue to use as the indicator (per the project instructions). Well, it came today and it's uhm, kind of a reddish/orange color in the bottle. I guess, silly me, I was expecting it to be BLUE! (According to the project instructions, it sounds like it should be blue.) Is this stuff that I got okay or what?
Any insight into this little boulder on our 'path to science enlightenment' would be appreciated. :-)

1. That's for testing pH, right? |
|
I'm guessing if it's not blue anymore it's been exposed to something acidic along the way? High school chem was many moons ago. You could try googling. http://www.google.com/search?q=bromthymol+blue

2. Bromothymol blue is actually yellowish-orange |
|
at one end of the PH spectrum, it turns blue at a different level of acidification. May have to do with the PH of the ambient solution.
It's probably okay as is -- it should change color when the PH changes, as far as I know.

3. it changes to blue in basic soln.... |
|
Bromthymol blue is yellow below pH 9 or so, then turns blue at pH 9.0-ll.0, if I recall correctly. That's why it's an indicator soln.
