Species struggle for 'Life' in astounding 11-part Discovery series
Edited on Sun Mar-21-10 12:19 AM by usregimechange

"Life" is an amazing spectacle.

That's not a philosophical statement but a restrained assessment of Discovery Channel's 11-part series, premiering at 7 p.m. Sunday. Produced with the BBC and narrated by Oprah Winfrey, the series took more than four years to make as camera operators on every continent shot nearly 3,000 hours of footage.

Even viewers who don't usually watch nature documentaries will find themselves drawn into the drama of a newborn elephant mired in mud, a strawberry poison arrow frog climbing for hours to make a safe nursery for her tadpoles and Komodo dragons slowly taking down a water buffalo.

It's impossible to watch colonies of grass-cutter ants in Argentina without thinking of a well-oiled agricultural collective. Millions of ants cut stalks of grass, then haul them underground to use as fertilizer for their food, a fungus.

5. DVR is set for the whole series
I can't see Oprah as the V.O. talent, but hopfully she'll surprise me.

6. Yer Gonna Need It.
I made the mistake of thinking I would help Discovery Networks pay their bills by watching live. Longish commercial breaks every ten minutes playing the same spots. That's a mistake I'll make again. Didn't Planet Earth run (at least for the first ep.) without commercial interruptions?

7. I watched, didn't like it at all for the same reason.
Very disappointed.

Here are some animals, here they are having sex. Commercial.

Here is another animal, here he is killing another animal, now he's having sex. Commercial.

Lame.

8. It Would Have Been Slightly More Bearable...
if they ran the spots right after each segment. With two young-ones it's nice to take a little break for discussion and snacks. Instead they would just begin to touch on another segment then go to commercial. My kids loved it as a whole but toward the end of the first hour even they were :eyes:.
