49 years ago today: Vostok 1
Yuri Gagarin took one orbital lap of the Earth on this day in 1961. It would be slightly more than 10 months later before the U.S.A. would orbit a human being (remember Shepard and Grissom flew suborbital hops), with John Glenn's Friendship 7 flight on February 20, 1962.

3. I remember there used to be a statue of him in Karlovy Vary
...little spa town in the former Czechoslovakia. Never did get anyone to explain why.
