Conservapedia: E=mc^2 Is A Liberal Conspiracy
To many conservatives, almost everything is a secret liberal plot: from fluoride in the water to medicare reimbursements for end-of-life planning with your doctor to efforts to teach evolution in schools. But Conservapedia founder and Eagle Forum University instructor Andy Schlafly -- Phyllis Schlafly's son -- has found one more liberal plot: the theory of relativity.

If you're behind on your physics, the Theory of Relativity was Albert Einstein's formulation in the early 20th century that gave rise to the famous theorum that E=mc2, otherwise stated as energy is equal to mass times the square of the speed of light. Why does Andy Schlafly hate the theory of relativity? We're pretty sure it's because he's decided it doesn't square with the Bible.

1. But, but, but...Bible's aren't square
Edited on Tue Aug-10-10 02:55 PM by SpiralHawk
They are really kinda rectangular and stuff. So it's no theological mystery why Andy Shlafly can't get E = MC 2 to square up with the Bible.

Now if he would only try to rectangularize Relativity with the Bible, he'd be on to something. Or other.

Irrefutable proof: This image proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Bibles are not square.

2. I guess we can look forward to a rewrite of the Conservapedia articles on Copernicus and Kepler
to inform us of the heresy that is heliocentrism.

8. I'm curious as to where Andy stands on our military budget,
One of his "points":

18.The lack of a single useful device developed based on any insights provided by the theory; no lives have been saved or helped, and the theory has not led to other useful theories and may have interfered with scientific progress.<11> This stands in stark contrast with every verified theory of science. The only device based on relativity is the atom bomb, but that has destroyed far more lives than it's saved so it can hardly be considered useful.

Since the atom bomb is not useful, does he object to all of our expenditures on maintaining and nuclear force?

10. Not too hard to name devices........
Anything which uses fast electrons, or any fast particle, necessarily uses special relativity. Particle accelerators of almost any description, and electron microscopes come to mind. Now of course they aren't practical applications, because they save lives in medicine, but those were lives God "wanted to end." They don't count in the rightwingnut universe.

11. There is also a discussion about GPS.
Edited on Fri Aug-13-10 07:08 AM by Jim__
Apparently (based on a discussion on their talk page), the clocks on satellites run at a different rate than the clocks on earth and so GPS has to take this into account. The discussion is actually kind of funny because Schlafly (and his mother who chimes in and tries to help) is in way over his head in trying too argue the point.

...whatever he thinks he means by that.

12. All part of the conservatives' plan to make the US a third world country
Dumb down the populace. Poison the land, air and water with chemicals. Profit off the diseases and illness that causes. Kill off the middle class. Privatize everything so nothing gets done without profits for the rich. Take over the courts. Corrupt the elections to keep their bought-and-paid-for cronies in office.

Done and done.

14. In a way, he's right. There is a liberal plot afoot.
To educate the world, promote critical thinking, end poverty, stabilize and build robust economies world-wide, eliminate the need for war, promote prosperity for all, develop renewable energies, clean up the environment, etc., etc., etc.

It's a conspiracy all right. I'm in on it and the conservatives are the ones standing in the way.

16. Well...
After a few months of Palin and Beck repeating this story in the news, polls will indicate that 58% of America think Albert Einstein was a Socialist Nazi refugee spy sent to confuse Americans with smart stuff... like math.

17. Now that this thread has died down
it's time to wonder whether Schlafly rejects that sort of science for the same reason that Hitler rejected it, namely that it is Jewish.
