Universe 'Likes' to Form Galaxies Similar to the Milky Way
ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2010) — Galaxies like our own Milky Way formed easily and have also been the largest spiral galaxies in the universe for almost 4 billion years.

This is shown in a new study by associate professor Kambiz Fathi of the Department of Astronomy at Stockholm University. The study is now published in the scientific journal The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Astronomers believe that galaxies are formed by a complex interplay between the processes that affect not only the stars and gas but also to supermassive black holes and possibly also the mysterious dark matter that surrounds every galaxy and whose nature remains unexplained.

"Galaxy formation history may be telling us something about the places in the universe where life can form," says Kambiz Fathi. Large galaxies like the Milky Way swim in a sea of many smaller galaxies, and in this process assimilate the small galaxies, sort of in the same fashion as "mergers and acquisitions" in the financial world.

1. Even galaxies must follow the laws of this universe
There is a theory that our universe is not the only one out there, there are innumerable universes. The Multi-Verse. Some say all the universes are lined up in columns and rows like billiard balls arranged on a giant pool table. Others believe they are all around our universe, like so many beach balls in a giant canvas bag.

The laws of our universe may be different than the laws of the next universe and that different than the next and so on. So, we have a speed of light that is 186,000 miles per second and a weak nuclear force that is "x" and so on. The next universe may have a different set of values for all these things.

So in our universe there may be a predilection for spiral galaxies whereas in the next universe another form may dominate, or galaxies may not exist at all if gravity or the other forces have been tweaked just so.

Once you start thinking of Multiverses and then tie in M Theory, which says that our universe does not have only 4 dimensions but probably has 11 dimensions... That's about the point where my head starts spinning and I go turn on the tv or go out and putter in the yard, maintain sanity better that way.

4. I believe all of our Universe's singularities are shared with all the other universes.
I also believe black hole singularities and quantum particles are just different expressions of the exact same thing. They all equal zero as far as local space is concerned (mass is a different matter, no pun intended), and basic math says zero always equals zero. So...

Hey, I can have a theory too! :)
