Soldier Begging For Dog Food For Deployed Dogs
Commander Says Dogs Live Off Scraps And Garbage

POSTED: 2:58 pm EST January 5, 2005

LAS VEGAS -- The commander of an Army Reserve detachment in Iraq is begging friends back home to send food for Iraqi police dogs.

Capt. Gabriella Cook said in e-mails that the 13 dogs at the Iraqi Police Academy in Baghdad are living on table scraps and garbage. She said some of the dogs are sick -- and there's no way to get real dog food.

Cook's unit -- the 313th Military Police Detachment, based in Las Vegas -- arrived in the Iraqi capital last month. A Nevada veterinarian estimated that each of the police dogs needs 40 pounds or more of dry food per month.

Nevada Sen. John Ensign is a veterinarian. He said he has an aide investigating. But when contacted Wednesday, his office said they were unsure where to send donations and that they are looking into it.

1. I am going to do what some others have done and write letters to dog food
companies. Surely a few of the more independent, natural dog food companies can donate. I will post some links in a while. Should we also write to the big companies? Perhaps there are some people there with some redeeming qualities?

2. I belong to quite a few animal rescue groups online.
I have posted this article on all their message boards. Believe me, these people will make sure those poor doggies get food.

5. There was something posted from a TV news story
I don't know the link, but I'm sure a rescue group will repost. Science Diet will be supplying a continuous donation and some other group is supplying the transportation for the food.
