Vegan=sickly in The Lounge
I'm not bashing The Lounge, nor the posters that draw stereotypes. I just had to get it off my chest.

I know dozens and dozens (literally) of vegans, personally. I know them well enough to know how often they're sick, what they look like physically, etc. Not one of them is "sickly" as the stereotype suggests. Sorry, had to get that off my chest. Here's the thread:

3. Good god, that thread was fucking obnoxious.
I really don't bother anymore. Especially when those threads get so large, it's like trying to have a discussion on the Ricki Lake show.

(Okay, I lied, when I've been drinking and feeling fiesty, I go and needle at the insecure meat-eaters every once in a while)

4. That thread sucked
I really hate it when people start waving the banner of CHOICE w/ regards to this issue in particular, as though it were comparable the color of your car (someone actually drew a parallel between sexual preference and dietary 'preference')

And I'm not even very vocal about not eating meat

Damn

7. Yep, that's the one I was talking about.
 I am so tired of having to defend my choices becasue other people question their own motives for eating meat

10. It is infuriating
Meat is murder, why try to extenuate it w/ all this "eat what you want to eat" claptrap.

I just keep reminding myself that it's only the internet, that something about the relative anonymity of a message board summons the beastliness in people that would otherwise stay dormant

12. Here's the rub, at least to me
I joined DU to be around progressives. Don't get me wrong, I love DU and so many of the great folks here. I also understand that no family will get along 100% on everything, but damn, these folks drank the "Beef. It's what's for dinner." koolaid. I question our movement over things like closed-mindedness, and topics like this concern me.

The "people need to eat meat" statement is as factual as "Iraq has WMDs" but some can't see the forest for the trees.

I'm very, very disappointed. But, hey, when you expect more, you set yourself up for disappointment.

13. I couldn't agree more.
I hear more right wing bullshit on this board than I ever would have imagined. It is so sad b/c I really love DU, and some people just love to make it miserable. I guess that's what ignore is for. :eyes:

8. Hey, my dad lives on nothing but beef and rice
he has a pacemaker, is 100 pounds overweight and just had surgeries for kidney stones and an aortic aneurysm. Damn, now that's meat eatin' health! :eyes:

9. Well, it's kind of like telling a smoker they are killing themselves.
People that eat meat or smoke or are obese etc. will attribute ill health to ANYTHING other than the obvious, if it's caused by something they aren't willing to give up.

14. I can't believe how people in the lounge
are REFUSING to believe that a diet comprised almost exclusively of red meat could cause health problems! They're actually blaming my father's poor health on the small amount of rice and potatoes he consumes at dinner!!! :wtf:

By their logic, red meat is the ONLY truly "healthy" food on the planet.

15. I just read that Lorien.
The same person that said that to you keeps saying "eat a cheeseburger" over and over. Does he actually think that's funny? Jesus H. Christ if I see that "joke" one more time I think I am gonna scream! :argh:

16. He'll probably end up like my dad
and he'll be paying for his coronary on a bun with his life (which I hope my dad doesn't do. But DAMN). I don't know why some people try to force their unhealthy food choices on everyone else. If someone were living on cheese covered potatoes and nothing else, I would tell them it was unhealthy. If their answer to every diet was "cheese covered potato", I'd think they had some bizarre OC disorder.

always think something like 'eat a cheesburger' or 'People Eating Tasty Animals" is so original and cleaver....aarrgghh! It's just stupid, ignorant and boring! :argh:
