"Vegans eat poo"--on another board
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 10:38 PM by AlienGirl
Look here

Read this disturbing thread--someone is claiming vegans regularly eat their own poo to get vitamin B-12! I hope I've shut him down with my post on that thread.

Has anyone else heard this rumor about vegan coprophagy?

4. OK I got it!
That is bizarre. That person said vegans ate their own poop as if we went to work with baggies of it and it was totally commonplace. I have NEVER heard that until tonight. :eyes: Your post was great, and I see one person replied thanking you for the clarification. Sheesh!

6. I know someone like that
Psych!

I know a "Cliff Claven" like that guy... Someone that likes to go on & on, telling everyone in full detail everything there is to know about a subject - and being completely WRONG... LOL

What I find amazing is that there were actually people taking that guy seriously!! Like they really believed him! Are vegans truly THAT misunderstood or are people just that gullible??

:wtf:

8. A lot of people don't even know what a vegan is.
I get tired of explaining it. I have one of those friends that always introduces me with "she's vegan". Then, I have to explain what it is and answer a million questions.

I guess it's a good opportunity to explain what a vegan really is, but I would just love it if people actually knew what it was. :P

Have you ever tried introducing her as a "flesh eater"? Hi Steph, I'd like to introduce you to Amber, she's a FLESH EATER. B-)

9. I've never heard that
That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. Besides, if our diets are so freakin' deficeint in B12 why would there be any in our crap? That doesn't even make any sense!

11. Well, technically it would be because
B12 is manufactured by the friendly bacteria living in your intestines.

However, the notion that a vegetarian or vegan diet will lead to vitamin b12 deficiency is a myth.

While it's technically and theoretically possible for a vegan diet to lead to a b12 deficiency, the odds of that happening are so slim they're not even worth mentioning, in my opinion. B vitamins are added to just about everything nowadays, from bread to OJ to soymilk to cereal, you name it, it's probably supplemented with B vitamins, including b12.

Further, everyone should take a multi-vitamin, even meat-eaters, so veggies who take a multi will get more than enough b12.

Finally, b12 is required by your body in extremely minute quantities, and can be recycled by your body for up to 30 years. So as long as you replenish your minute supply every few years, you're probably ok.

There are always exceptions, and some people cannot recycle it as well as others (or, in rare cases, even at all) - but nonetheless, the daily requirments are miniscule and like I said, B vitamins are found everywhere.

12. Very true
There have been no cases of B12 deficiency from dietary insufficiency. At least, there were none on Medline last time I looked it up. Cases of pernicious anemia are always caused by an inability to absorb B12 or a B12 storage problem.

14. Thanks Elad, I didn't know that! 30 years?
Note to self, forget about purchasing the b-12 suplements. We do take a multi and hubby can't put away that chocolate Silk and I use the regular variety at least once a day in cereal or cooking. Done.

Does that mean I'm a poser, or can I still be considered a real vegan?

25. Carnivores are the true poo-eaters.
I mean, most meat IS contaminated with the feces of animals. Sure, they aren't eating their OWN poo, like the vegans of the world obviously do, but the crap of one or many farm animals.

YUM!

26. Eat Organic Veggies = Eat Poo
I agreed with what you said, a lot of the meat sold in this country is probably contaminated with fecal matter.

But what if you get organic veggies fertilized with animal manure?

27. Yes, what if.
Well, I would say that considering the vegetables were grown taking nutrients from the manure is far different than a steak that physically has crap on it. I wash my veggies so any "surface residue" would be gone.

As ghastly as it is to consider, reality suggests that we all eat crap every day. Whether it's on our food, used to grow our food, or on the handle to the door we just opened (leaving the bathroom, after washing our hands, before we eat) you can find it almost anywhere.
