2. So what was the kid doing? |

I hate these scenarios, and yes, your friend is definitely overreacting.
In my perfect world, the definition of a responsible breeder is being responsible for the life of those pups they pimp into our world. Is it possible your friend can contact the breeder for advice/rescue?
Any breed, mixed or blue ribbon, will snap, growl and bite the ass of mannerless children. Mine have! Including one of my old lady springers, years ago, may she rest in peace, bit the face of a policeman friend's son. The kid jumped on her while her old arthritic body was in a deep sleep on the couch. I was horrified. Our friend was more so that his son was so STUPID. All dog bites have to be reported, and he assured us this wouldn't happen, it wasn't the dog's fault, all he cared about was her rabies vac was UTD.
Other stories include such mannerless children also, and responsible parents. No lawsuits yet.
Just hope your friend isn't looking for a reason to get rid of the dog. Bestest you can do at this point is take Mavis?
Hope this helps! Keep us informed. ((and yeah, we need to define responsible breeders of companion animals, instead of letting the taxpayer cover their asses over these *disposal* issues!!! )

I have been calling local shelters for the last few hours and nothing is open. She picked the dog up from the vet and has her at home, in the basement. She said she is taking her to the pound in the morning.
After a long argument, I have convinced her to wait until the afternoon so that I can try to find her a childless home. Or at least one with more well behaved kids.
I have never seen Mavis behave aggressively. I have however, had to tell my friend's son not to pinch, kick and hit the poor dog numerous times. He was not the child involved today, but I have no doubt she is afraid of all children because of him.
I am desperate to find her a home. I can't take her....I have 2 dogs already or I would. Could you please post this on any animal related message boards you may go to? I am going to post it in the pets forum as well.
Thanks guys....anything you can do to help, Mavis will be grateful.

They have a 5 year old chow mix who is afraid of his own shadow, and not necessarily thrilled with the house guest :) My parents took care of Mavis when she was a puppy and my friend was in the hospital, so they had no reservations about watching her again.
At any rate, she is safe and sound until I can find her a permanent home. At least I will be able to sleep tonight, knowing that much.
Poor baby - she has no idea what almost happened to her today
I will post a photo of her tomorrow :)
