How about a Vegan/Vegetarian/Animal Rights Forum meet-up?
I noticed that many of us are on the east coast, and several are in Virginia. How would you guys (and girls) feel about a meet-up that is not state-specific, but issue-specific?

I'm open to location, as long as it's a weekend, but I can definitely show you all around Richmond if you feel like making the trip. Just wondering....

1. Hey, ya'll should come to Alaska.
And witness global warming firsthand. It's fuckin' hot up here. Pardon my French.

I wish I could go, but I can't afford it. I could only go to North Carolina earlier this year because my sister had free airline tickets with her job.

14. Shockra, any suggestions on restaurants in Anchorage?
I'll be visiting next month. What are your favorite veggie spots? My experience in other places in AK is that options are limited.

15. Cool!
I rarely go out to eat, so I haven't tried any of the few places yet. You'll have to PM me about when you'll be here so if you'd like, we can try one out. :)

That's funny you should ask. There's a fairly new restaurant called The Tofu House (on Fireweed Lane) a mile from where I live that I was telling myself yesterday I'll have to check out. Now I have a good excuse, so I can tell you whether it's any good or not! The others I know about are:

Organic Oasis
2610 Spenard Rd (at Northern Lights/Fireweed Ln)

The Happy Cow guide says this in its listing:
Ova, Vegan-friendly, Organic, Macrobiotic, Juice-bar, Beer/Wine, Not 100% Vegetarian. Has vegetarian & vegan choices, live music most days, excellent juice & smoothie; owner offers nutritional counseling; also a small supplements natural food area and an organic co-op where members purchace dry goods & fresh local produce. Accept Credit Cards. Closed Sunday.

The Middleway Cafe on Northern Lights

With small, walnut colored tables and chairs and a stand up bar where you place and pick up your order, this location gathers many outdoor enthusiasts and vegetarian and vegan eaters. The place features tofu scrambles, waffles and organic granola, in addition to other breakfast items; all priced less than $7. Lunch includes a variety of wraps such as the falafel with tomatoes, cucumbers and other veggies ($6.95), vegetarian wrap ($6.95) and a Greek wrap with feta ($6.96). No alcohol is served.

The Snow City Cafe on 4th Avenue

Editor's review:

Opened in 1998, it became Anchorage's "Favorite New Restaurant" in its first year. Breakfast entrees such as the Tofu Scramble ($6.95) and Eggs Benedict ($6.95) are available until 5pm. Lunches include the Garden Pita and the Amigo Chicken Wrap (both $6.95). Fresh soup made daily ($5) is available for lunch or dinner and evening entrees of Tofu Stir-Fry ($9.95), Horseradish Crusted Alaska Salmon Filet ($12.95) and Pasta Pomodoro ($9.95) provide a varied menu sure to appeal to all taste buds.

Customer review:

This is a great place for vegetarian. Try their sampler salad plate with humus, couscous, & spicy noodles all tasty in their own ways. Also, try the Tofu Vegetable Stir Fry over brown rice. The tofu is flavorful (how often has that been said?) and the veggies are crisp with a touch of teryaki. Yum!

There are some good veggie burritos at Taco Del Mar on Benson Blvd. I just had a big fat black bean and rice one a couple days ago.

3. I like this idea.
Now, what would be funny, is if we (as many as could attend) printed all of our posts standing up for PETA and went and visited them at their offices. Then, wearing DU t-shirts, took a picture, with Ingrid, outside the big PETA building. Oh, how that would make some DUers cringe!!!

7. OMG you're an evil genius!
I've been laughing for the last five minutes thinking about this idea... I love it! I would SO do it, but I am in California (actually just went out to VA to visit family two weeks ago). Who knows, if something gets planned I could try to make it out there.

6. Norfolk would be a fun location.....
and we can certainly arrange a tour of the PETA headquarters, maybe meet Ingrid too! Lots of veg places downtown and reasonable hotel rates.

I like the poll idea! Maybe a "Would you be interested..." type poll in GD or GD-P ?

8. A poll about visiting PETA in GD or GD-P would be
one hell of a "hot" topic, if you get my drift. It would be oh so nice to see a couple of our PALS who'd surely chime in with their "I'd love to go so I can look in their freezer at all the dead animals!!!!! F*ing hypocrites!!" Blah, blah, blah, yada yada yada, ignorance, hate, lunacy.

9. Eh.....I'm going to pass on that.
Only on DU could a rather mundane topic such as a vegetarian/vegan meet-up turn into a 100+ post flamefest which will eventually have to be locked by the mods.

10. lol, isn't that the truth!
Still, when I sugessted a poll, I meant in here, where the people are sane ;)

A poll among us to see who would be interested. :)

12. LOL...What was I thinking !
In fact, after I posted that :banghead: But hey, that's what we're here for....throwing ideas around!

OK, how about we make the plans, then can we post a public message and invite those interested to come here to discuss? I've met alot of veg/ar people in our public discussions who are very supportive, but don't necessarily participate here regularly.

Just more dribbles....yes, do a poll here, maybe starting out, would you me interested in a Meet-Up, then another poll to pick a location!
