City employee disciplined for ordering drowning of stray dogs

07/31/2005

Associated Press

A South Texas public works supervisor has been disciplined for ordering city employees to drown six stray dogs at the city sewer plant to save money.

Jourdanton City Councilman Darrell Richter said the workers took the dogs from the pound to the sewer plant and dropped their cages into the water.

Texas law says stray dogs and cats can only be euthanized by gassing them with carbon monoxide or injecting them with sodium pentobarbital at an animal shelter.

City Manager Dan Nick said the supervisor would have to attend classes with animal control. He said city officials were drafting a policy to prevent similar future incidents.

"It only happened once that I know of and I have taken corrective action," Nick said, describing the drownings as "a freak incident, a one-time bad decision."

2. "a one-time bad decision"
The understatement of the response pisses me off almost as much as the knuckle-dragger that did it.

3. Sick, absolutely sick.
There aren't any words right now. I'm just sick to my stomach.

It is a good thing I don't own a gun, because these people would be on my hit list - it'd be doing humanity a favor I think.

4. a freak incident, a one-time bad decision...
Uh. Huh. That's pretty much a guarantee that it happened more than once.

5. How awful, that is....
Texas still has gas chambers too! Also, the pure torture that must have been for the dogs should be a felony, pure and simple.

This is so not like the PETA "scandal", probably won't make national news either.

My heart just breaks for stupid humans and the animals that depend on them

So...who's going to post this in GD ?

12. well did you expect anything less?
It's going good so far- hang in there!

I think Mr. antipetaman thought better of his post. After all he does claim to support other animal rescue groups. maybe he didn't want that thread to go off topic.

Hey, I can dream can't i?

14. I know what you mean
sometimes you like and agree with the posts someone makes but on certain topics you can have completely opposing views. I guess that's what makes the world go round.

Between animal rights and abortion rights it can get pretty ugly.
