Foie gras action needed
Just saw this in my Humane Farming Association's newsletter:

Apparently there's some very misleading legislation pending in NY - it pretends to criminalize force feeding, but it actually contains no criminal penalties and has been deliberately designed to undercut all existing state anti-cruelty laws (until the year 2016!). This sellout completely trivializes animal torture - and directly benefits New York State's sole producer of foie gras.

http://www.hfa.org/force_feeding/ny3330a.html

The HFA is asking that even if you don't live in NY, PLEASE contact Governor Pataki and ask him to VETO the "force-feeding bill" (A 6212 and S 3330) if it reaches his desk.

Governor George E. Pataki
State Capitol
Albany, NY 12224
(518) 474-8390

If you live in New York state, please contact your State Senator and ask them to OPPOSE S 3330 by Senator Bonacic. Mention that S 3330 would only benefit the state's sole producer of foie gras and that it is NOT a "compromise" but a betrayal for the animals involved in this barbaric practice just for the sake of profit.

Please pass this along to your friends (whether they live in NY or not!) and urge them to contact Governor Pataki!

1. Ooh, that is just vile.
The S 3330 Score Card
Analysis of costs and benefits

New York’s corrupted foie gras legislation serves the political, financial, and organizational interests of the people involved. But it makes matters worse for the animals. The following shows exactly what would be gained by the winners, and the losers.

Hudson Valley Foie Gras receive the following:

*The cruel force feeding of birds is explicitly declared legal in New York through 2016.

*The company gains complete and total immunity from any criminal charges related to its force feeding practices.

*The company is given total immunity from any future civil actions related to its force feeding practices.

*The company need no longer worry about city, county, or state legislation that would ban force feeding.

*The company is given eleven more years to come up with “studies” in defense of force feeding. This means additional animal research.

*Armed with its own studies, the company can avoid restrictions on its cruel practices even after 2016.

*With the security of knowing that it would be protected by law, the company can expand its operations and increase the number of birds being force fed.

:argh:

2. Tell me about it.
This is so sick and repulsive - I'm not sure what is worse: this or veal production.
