The wonderful Musk Ox!!
Edited on Sat Jan-01-05 10:31 PM by MyPetRock
"Friends of the Musk Ox" is an example of how humans and animals can exist peacefully and cooperatively to the benefit of both. Please help this magnificent and adorable animal in any way you can. It is one of the few survivors of our last ice age. I've seen, petted, and "talked" with these beings at Palmer Musk Ox Farm. Now I am totally devoted to their survival. Take a look at the web page and see if you don't agree that Musk Oxen are awesome!!!

1. I went to the site
It seems cool, but its maintained by a parent site who has other links, one of which is an outfitter, who uses big game. There was a nasty picture of all these dead bears hanging. Check out some of the links from the parent page.

I really wish I hadn't clicked on that link  HOW can anyone kill an animal??? That bear looked like a big dog lying there dead. :(

ETA:
Wonderful site though.....if I ever travel to Alaska, it is something I'd be sure to check out. Thanks for posting it!

3. Oh, that is awful!
I hadn't seen it. Let's e-mail them and complain. When I visited the farm people there seemed very pro-animal. Specifically, they were adamantly opposed to the terrible wolf farms, where hybrid wolves are permanently kept on chains and people pay to go see them. However, I didn't inquire about their hunting views. Also, this was 9 years ago. Alaska is full of the hides of killed animals,. I was upset about this when I visited, but thought the Musk Ox Farm was an exception to this cruelty. Maybe they'll reply to e-mails about the subject, and hopefully get rid of the link. I'm going to make my contribution contingent on this. Thanks for informing me.

4. I never would have thought to do that
until I went to a website about Martin Luther King Jr., It wasn't a fact-loaded site, so I tooled around on the links. When I went to the parent site it was a white pride group. That made me cautious.

They may be oblivious to the other sites, but your contingency is a good idea. I'll e-mail them, too. It does seem like a good group, I bet they don't want the negative association.

5. I sent them an email.
I wonder if they even knew? I wrote to them about it as if they didn't, anyway.

6. me too
I sent them a link to the Woods Outfitter guy. I really hope they are unaware of the connection. Those pictures are so vile. I can't believe anyone would want to kill those beautiful animals.

8. I sent them one and also made the assumption that it was a mistake.
However, as a long term contributor I made it clear that I couldn't support an organization that condoned the hunting of animals for sport. Many indigenous Alsakan people need to hunt to eat, but hunting to put trophy animal heads on the wall, or their pelts on the floor is NOT acceptable.

7. The mission statement is a little curious, too
"Situated in Palmer, Alaska, the Musk Ox Farm is a private non-profit organization dedicated to the development and domestication of the musk ox, Ovibos moschatus."

I don't know what they mean by "development," but I'm opposed to the domestication of any wild animal.

9. They are protecting the species, but that was an unfortunate term.
I know they use the Musk Ox fur to support their Farm, but I have no information that the animals are killed for meat. If I find out that they do, though, I will end my association with the farm.

10. seemed kind of like a refuge
I wonder if poaching is a problem with them and they feel they need to protect them. Could be a stretch.

The development thing did sound a little creepy. Made me think of cloning.

We'll have to keep checking to see if they stick with it, but it's good to know it wasn't intentional.

13. After reading 3 in a row
she probably realized there was something going on. We should give her a week or so, then start e-mailing again. I just can't stand the memory of those bears.

14. I know it.
I saw a show on Animal Planet, I think it was called "growing up grizzly". Watching those bears, was amazing. There was something about them. Jenifer Aniston was on this show, and she hopped on one foot then the bear did it. The man that raised them was literally rolling around with them in the grass playing and had his head in their mouths. It was just an awesome thing to see. They rerun it quite often, so if you haven't seen it you should really watch it next time it's on! :D
