for sourdough bakers.
I was reading this book Crust & Crumb by )Peter Reinhart that housewoof recommended. In the back he gives a list of resources & one was this cite that offers sourdough strains from Russia, Egypt, Italy, etc including the starter for San Francisco bread.

I haven't ordered any yet, but will in the next day or two. I just thought I would post this for anyone else that's interested.

3. "Hi" back at cha...
I haven't had time to do much more than read some of the posts to try to keep up on what's going on around here, both in this forum and in GD. There's been so much going on the past couple of months, it's hard to keep up.

But I do check in here and read some of the post, even though I haven't had much to contribute of late. Believe me, I sorely miss my DU hours that I used to spend here!

I baked some cinnamon-caramel-walnut rolls made with a brioche dough the other day - yum! They were something to take note of, if I do say so myself.

Thanks for callin' me out, it's good to talk to you!

6. Oh, YUM.
I have a recipe for cinnamon rolls that I thought was the best ever. Then we went to the Farmer's Market & there was a baker that had cinnamon rolls w/hazelnuts made out of brioche. I absolutely, positively cannot get out of the market without one of his rolls. I've been dying to try it myself, but just figured DH & I would eat the whole damned pan. We're getting together with family for Thanksgiving. I think I'll make them to take. I know you're busy, so I won't ask for your recipe. I think I'll just make brioche & then do the usual Cinnamon, etc.

8. The recipe came from Rose Levy Beranbaum's "The Bread Bible"
One of my fave's.

The rolls came to an untimely end, I am sorry to say. I got home from work to find the pyrex baking pan they were in on the floor, shattered into millions of tiny pieces and the rolls no where to be found.... my 120 lb dog ballooned up to about 125 lbs, and me now scared to death that he ate glass shards along with the sticky buns....

So far he seems okay, and I can re-make the rolls. He doesn't usually steal food from the counters but I guess these were irresistable to him.

10. I'll definitely check out that book.
Too funny about your pooch stealing. I'm sure the smell was too much. I'll keep good thoughts that he's fine.

4. Just let me know when you're ready...
We'll figure out some way to get together. I'm alway happy to gift a little sourdough starter to a friend, and finally it's cool enough to be able to work with one some.

7. I think I'll go with the San Fran one first,
since San Fran bread is what I grew up eating.

9. I liked their "Original San Francisco" starter quite a bit
It was my favorite starter for a number of years and sometimes I think about starting it up again - you can't go wrong with it.

Best of luck with your sourdough adventures.

11. Hokey smoke
I've known about lactobacillus sanfrancisco for years, but this is the first I've known you could get the right yeast, too.

Thing is, I've never tried real French bread. Anyone have a good recipe that would work with a Kitchen Aid mixer and a regular oven? I do have a pizza stone I could put in the oven.

12. I have their South African starter.
It's good but not much better then my own starter.

You can get a start of Carl Griffith's 1847 Oregon Trail Sourdough Starter free, just need a self addressed stamped envelope. Info at http://home.att.net/~carlsfriends/

Awesome! Imagine, a living piece of history. I'm sending for some, and then I will use housewolf's tips for making bread.
