Has anyone stopped eating canned tuna because of
the mercury? I'm watching the global warming special and am wondering. Larry David riffed on how he can't eat tuna anymore because of the mercury. Kennedy and Imus have also talked about the dangers of mercury, so who's stopped? Not me. Am I crazy?

1. I stopped

...during the late 70's. It wasn't one of my favorite foods, so it hasn't been hard.

Cheers!

2. I refuse to live in fear
Nothing better than Italian tuna canned in olive oil, with some really lovely olives, slices of red onion marinated in red wine vinegar, tomato slices, some chilled hard-cooked eggs, and crusty Italian bread.

Or a tuna sandwich on Wonder bread.

I'll die of something. If I die of tuna, well, that's one way to go.

Life's too short.

3. we have a good local packer that sells albacore tuna in olive oil....
It's as good as most premium Italian brands, IMO. Strictly small batches, available seasonally. I buy lots when I find it, then keep it on the shelf all year. I don't eat canned tuna all that often, but when I do, that's the only one I eat.

5. Same here
Once you've had the Italian stuff - or the stuff you get locally, you shamelessly lucky devil, you - you don't even consider that other stuff, do you?

It's SO damn good...........

6. Take that Italian oil pack tuna ........
Heat some olive oil in a frying pan ..........

Add some gahlic ........ don't allow it to brown

Add some roasted red peppers (the kind in a jar are perfect) cut in strips about 1-1/2" long .........

Add some white wine ...........

Add some fresh basil, oregano and pahsley ........

Simmer it all down ............

Add the canned tuna ...........

Put it all on macaroni (orchietto is a great shape for this) ........

Sprinkle liberally with more of the three herbs ..........

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmMMMph!

7. Ohhhhhhhhh
Now, my dear, you're TALKIN'!!

Thinking of you, I might even find myself near a Marshall's (or, as my female colleagues and I always referred to it, "'Shall's") and the next explosive sound you hear will be me looking for knives or cookware.

Be prepared for the sonic boom that will follow.

Grazie.

4. I would only worry if you eat it often,
or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Fetuses and babies are extremely sensitive neurologically to mercury. Stunts their brain growth or something.

I don't much care for canned tuna, so it is not a huge issue for me.

9. I thought the canned light tuna was OK.
It's the white albacore and tuna steaks that are higher.

10. It was always a favorite in our house
Alas we've cut our consumption down to only once or twice a month. It's my understanding the "Light" tuna is not as toxic....but then again it's not as good.

I second the endorsements of the Italian Olive Oil packed fish. It is great on Pasta.....Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

But Bumblebee Solid White mixed with Mayo and a little onion served up on Wonderbread (toasted-please) is pretty close to lunch-time heaven on a plate.

11. I eat less, but I'll never stop.
Tuna is an extremely healthy food, high in Omega-3 fats and chock full of nutrients. Plus it tastes so damn good.

I've cut back on my consumption, but I still eat 1-2 cans a month.
