What are you thinking of having for Christmas dinner ?
Another turkey or something else? I like prime rib, wild rice, cranberries and green beans almondine with mince meat pie and cherry pie. We'll see, last year's prime ribs weren't very good. Then save the extra turkey for New Years.

1. We're very casual about Christmas.
All of our children are grown and there are no grandchildren. We have a brunch -- usually breakfast tacos -- then go to a movie. Then we come home and have something like lasagna. No one wants to spend the day cooking and cleaning in the kitchen on Christmas at our house!

2. We just have homemade soups
Two or three choices, but they must be made from scratch. Dessert is still included of course.

4. Actually, I'm going to try a couple from this very thread..
including the slow-cooker pork roast in apple cider, and your chile relleno casserole.

5. Every Year, Same Thing: TAMALES!
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 02:39 AM by K8-EEE
I have an old-fashioned southern california christmas, it goes like this

Guacamole, chips

Salad greens with candied pecans and goat cheese

Choice of chicken or vegetarian tamales, with chipotle sauce, rice and beans

Pumpkin pie from Costco!

I get the tamales frozen from Corn Maiden here in L.A. -- they are DELICIOUS!! All you have to do is steam them and mark the veggie ones with a thread.

The only thing I really make is guacamole, rice and beans which I do a day ahead so this is a pretty easy dinner. Everyone raves about it though! Anybody looking for awesome tamales check out the product list on http://www.cornmaidenfoods.com/

They sure have some unusual combinations! Every one I've ever tried have been awesome but my faves are still the goat cheese, and the gouda with smoked chicken.

I know exactly where that is!! Still old-Hollywood cool...I hate it when big condos and stuff come and take over those nice little bungalow avenues.

11. Ham
The dh has to buy the biggest half-ham he can find for the two of us. I'll be eating ham for weeks. As revenge, I always make beef rib roast for New Year's.

14. Christmas Eve - tamales and ham
Just like when we were kids at my granmother's house. Christmas Eve is my Dad's birthday, so it always was a big party. I can still remember Christmas Eve's from the early sixties in my Grandmother's basement.

We have another turkey for Christmas Day. They were .57 a lb so I bought two.

15. I like those cornish hens
they're festive and stuff nice with wild rice mix and you don't have all that cleanup, leftovers and fuss you have with turkey.

She's planning on having a standing rib and leek Yorkshire pudding in addition to as yet other undecided items. She's a excellent cook so I know it will be wonderful.

18. At this point, I have no idea
It will depend on if my husband is here or not, and if he is we will have whatever he requests. Which may be a homemade stirfry with lots of hot peppers in it, or homemade chili, or turkey...
I know that I will make a chocolate pound cake while he is home and a lemon souffle, his two favorite desserts.

If he for some reason is not here on Christmas Day, my daughter and I will come up with something we both want.

Ilove to cook so whatever we all feel like will be fine.

The big family get together for his family will not be on Christmas Day anyway.

I miss the family dinners when I was a kid, with my cousins and aunts and uncles. One of my grandmothers did a huge dinner with turkey, ham, or roast beef (one year quail braised in butter sauce) and lots of veg. She usually cooked it all herself, and we usually took up a cake or two (german chocolate, jam or coconut cream)

On my dad's side, we had a big family dinner on the Sunday evening nearest to Christmas, and everyone brought something..certain family favorites always appeared: Granny's chocolate brazilnut cake, my mother's egg and cheese casserole and frozen fruit salad, any pie my mom made, Aunt Jane's home cured country ham, boiled custard, ambrosia, coconut cake...etc.

One year when my inlaws were both in bad health, I went over to their house and cooked Christmas dinner..roast loin of pork, green beans, squash, mashed potatoes, rolls, the essential chocolate pound cake, etc. I did the roast and beans and cake and the other sisters in law brought everything else. It was so much fun!

So we're going to do the traditional turkey dinner, even though it's just the two of us.

I'm so excited. A tree! I get a TREE!

With a salad and garlic french bread. And we'll do several desserts, such as a chocolate and raspberry cake, beignets, and bread pudding with rum sauce. Yum! :9
