I'm STILL ALIVE!!!
I just used my OXO mandoline for the first time - yep, more onion soup - and it was wonderful. Perfect.

I'd like to thank the Academy and all my .......... oh, wrong speech.

I would, though, like to thank the folks who warned me about always using the holder. It would have been so seductive, especially for a lazy sort such as I, just to slap the onions onto the blade. I didn't do that, and my digits, all fourteen of them, are intact, thank to you good people.

The soup is simmering, and it had better be good. I paid over $9 for five very large organic yellow onions at Whore Foods yesterday.

Thanks again.

3. Shoot OLL that's a bunch o onions
They better be good for that amount of money. I've been known to fork over the dough for the organic stuff much to SO's distain...but damn, you may have beat me here...Then again, I'm not much of a fan of onion soup so I can't quite relate personally to this craving of yours.

I hope you have a wonderful bowl or two!

5. Thank you, thank you.......
It's nice and cold here - mid-thirties all day - so the hot soup's quite nice and easy.

Here's the scoop on the onions - I bought a three-pound bag at our local Giant (the chain grocer - H2S knows them, I'm sure) - which cost $3.49.

(I remember when onions were $.33 a pound. I am old.)

So, I set out on my first batch of onion soup that day, and fuck all if I found rot on almost every damn onion! They'd been frozen, had that yellowish translucent cast to them, and I ended up throwing away just about all of them.

The worst part is that this isn't the first time I've had this happen with Giant produce.

I vowed, NEVER AGAIN.

In Whore Foods, these onions were so beautiful - they're really HUGH!1!1!! - and so perfect-looking, the tragic part is that I would have bought them at $10 a pound, just because I was so pissed at myself for doing that Giant thing TWICE.

In fact, the best place I know for onions is Costco, but I've got a knee that's in the midst of rehab, it's the Christmas Rush there, and I'll go onion shopping at Costco AFTER the holidays.

I guess there are no deals on good produce anywhere anymore.

And, thank you. The soup's ready now. I wish I could share it with you, you brazen hussy who won't share her cookies. :spray:

7. I used to by organic milk in the gallon size at our local grocery.
2-3 times, it was rotten. I always brought the receipt in for a refund, at $6 a gallon it adds up fast, but it was also completely inconvenient to suddenly be out of milk when I thought I had two gallons in the fridge.

I frequently justify my grocery splurges by adding up what it would have cost to buy a meal out that I cooked myself. I always come out ahead that way :)

8. I don't think I can shop at Whore Foods any more
not after listening to that twit of a CEO blame sick people for not checking out prices before they go to the hospital to get that heart attack taken care of, thus driving up the cost of his insurance premiums.

Luckily, I live a short scooter ride from a food co op and a longer ride from a Wild Oats. I haven't heard their CEOs, so I can live in my illusions.

I'm glad your first mandoline experience went well and that all our cautionary tales of skin in the soup enforced the use of the holder.

Now try some angel hair coleslaw. It will be nice with that New Year's dinner.

11. Oh, how I wish.........
There's not a co op for miles and miles where we are, but you bet that would be my market of choice. I remember shopping at the Berkeley co op when such a thing was weird.

I'm old.

The CEO of Whore Foods said that? What a prick.

My next project is going to be my favorite cucumber salad with a sesame dressing. It's SO good.

Then, cole slaw - although, right now, that shredding thing scares me.

And, again, thank you.

13. Really?
OK, after Thursday's upcoming vegetable soup, the red onion soup's next on the agenda.

Beef stock, or chicken? What's your preference?
