2. I don't know about your basic border collie
but MY basic border collie is currently jumping at the walls trying to follow a shadow across the room and driving me nuts.

He's actually part Border Collie and part schizophrenic.

But at least it sounds like yours is nice! :)

3. The only behavior of hers that bothers me is when she
poops or pees she does that kicking/dirt scratching/dirt throwing thing some dogs do. Its hard on my muddy winter lawn.

And our scardy cat is cowering in her hooch (kitty condo) on top of the credenza hutch in the office.

4. I don't know where you live
but if you have a "muddy winter lawn" I'll guess it's not too far north.

You want to have fun, try snowblowing your driveway while your Border Collie attempts to herd the snowblower.

Although I do have to worry about mine jumping into the blades, when I'm done I have a nice snowblown driveway with pretty little overlapping decorative rings along each side of the driveway, which is the path he leaves when constantly running circles around the snowblower the whole time I'm using it.

And god forbid I shuffle a pack of cards in his presence :eyes:

He really does need to get out more.

14. Right. Not that far north
We're in Maryland. The ground was frozen for a few weeks, but we've had a warm-up the past week or so. Pretty typical.

When the boys were young we had another border collie. They were maybe 3 and 6 at the time and it was the dead of winter when she first came home. We went out to play in the snow with her, throwing snowballs that she'd chase and catch. Or so we thought. We soon realized that she'd herded us into a tight circle with her on the outside coaxing us in.

Even though we live on a dead-end cul-de-sac, she continued to herd the kids back onto the front yard if they strayed into the street.

She was a great dog. Gone maybe 15 years and I still miss her.

15. Kitty fears everything
Neuroticat.

Her only fearlessness is in the morning when she gets her daily session of the 'cat crazies and runs around like she's in charge of the world. She looks at us as if to say "Its cat stuff. You wouldn't understand."

9. Or as some of my friends would say....
he's ALL Border collie, same as when you talk about a particularly rambunctious and destructive toddler as ALL boy.

A weird fact about C & B, many of us currently own or have owned a BC. Guess you fit right in!

5. Okay, well... she's keep you busy, entertained and alert
Border collies are great dogs - loyal, smart and entertaining. According to dog intelligence experts, they are the most intelligent breed. They are also highly energetic and run circles around things trying to herd them. You can't keep a border collie from doing her job! They are working dogs and they live to work!

Enjoy her visit! She'll keep you on your toes this week for sure, but as good-hearted as you are you'll be rolling on the floor laughing rather than fuming.

One big caveat - don't leave food where she can get it or it _will_ be gone in a flash.

Happy New Year!

7. Not always true
Some dogs will, others won't.

Mine is quite respectful of food. But he's one of four dogs (and my ex-wife and I used to breed dogs).

Some dogs are just very food-driven, others aren't. I can't seem to find a pattern among breeds. Even within a breed, some are very food-oriented, others couldn't care less.

On the bright side, if you have a very food-driven dog, it gives you an edge up in training them. It's a very powerful incentive.

Anyway, this isn't meant to be a dog thread, but...

10. My recently deceased BC was very respectful of food.
But she was very into boundaries, too. I never needed a fence for the yard, I just showed her line once and she never crossed it after that without my ok. Same with food, if it wasn't in her bowl, she waited for permission to eat. A *very* easy dog to live with, provided she got regular exercise.

8. awww, cute! hey did you ever sort out that dirt/ mold in the shower
problem? cause i was gonna post on that thread but it was pretty old. LOL.
i use a 10% bleach spray 1X a week, and it takes care of it pretty well. i'm so sure it's mold.
i'm a barefooter as well, and love my soapy soles! i think it helps too......

attempt ....... Bar Keeper's Friend and a lot of elbow grease.

22. okay, but now that it's clean. i suggest a mild bleach solution
roughly weekly to keep it out of those crevices. it made me laugh, because i get those same weird patterns of clean little rivers heading towards the drain too. my guess is that they are exposed more often to all sorts of cleansers and the dirt never piles up there in the first place. i think it's staying clean because i drip more soap/ shampoo there- it's right between where i stand and the bottles are and everything, so it's like soapy central. i'm pretty sure it never gets as grimey in the first place. but i have some corners that get moldy and i have to zap em with the bleach, so i do the floor too, and it seems to be working, (after i scrubbed it)
happy new years H2S, i'm bookmarking that asparagus recipe, so thanks! :hi:

Here is my new guy, Sam. He is a BC/Australian cattle dog mix. Not as brilliant as my pure BC, but a lot less high strung. He is a great guy. The only problem I have been having, he is *very* protective of the house and his peeps. Which is fine up to a point. But he will not quit with the barking, even after I ask. Oh well, I am sure he will get it in time.

Ruby, the BC I posted about in the past, died in July from chronic kidney failure.

On edit: Here is a pic of sweet Ruby.

18. Our first border collie was P.J. ... a pound foundling
She was the world's greatest dog (at least to us).

She went spontaneously blind in early middle age. It was 'spontaneous retinal atrophy' and seems to affect a lot of border collies. She was with us for a few years after the onset and never even seemed to lose her sunny dispositon ... but we were not allowed to move the furniture.
