I'll confess to Pepcid extra strength every other day or so. The worst heartburn comes from mayo, for some strange reason.

3. Tomatoes are the worst for me, especially in sauce with meat
and I have enough of a complex disease picture that it's OTC Prilosec with generic ranitidine for breakthrough and generic calcium carbonate overnight. It sucks. I only have to hit the ranitidine bottle maybe 2 days a month.

For all you foodies out there, another thing to stay away from if you know a dinner guest has GI problems is canola oil. It's one of the worst triggers out there. I can always tell when an eatery has decided to do their customers a favor and use it. Ouch.

4. Brioschi

I get a bit of heartburn from too much olive oil. Funnily enough, if I have olive oil uncooked, like from dipping bread, there's no problem. I can have as much as I want, and can tolerate any combination or amount of herbs in the dipping oil. Cooked olive oil, as in a topping for macaroni, with lots of condimenti added, is a little more problematic. If it is cut sufficiently with wine or other water-based liquid, hardly ever a problem. If there's not as much water-based liquid, then it bothers me.

Brioschi was the anatacid of choice for my parents and grandparents and I recall it well from my childhood. I used to mix it up as a beverage! It has a sort of lemony taste and lots of fizz. It is an odd looking thing, though. It looks like little snakes of crystals. Hard to describe, but it isn't a tablet at all.

6. OMG That stuff is still around?
I remember my mom giving me small doses of that when I had an upset tummy as a child. Much better than alka seltzer. I'll have to look for it next time I'm at the drug store. Thanks for the flashback H2S!

11. Yep, it's better than alka seltzer
It is a different compound entirely. I'm surprized it hasn't become more widespread. Effectiveness aside, it also tastes pretty good.

7. a bit like Alka-Seltzer, perhaps?
My dad used to have an Alka-Seltzer every night. It isn't too bad tasting if the water is really cold. It doesn't work for me, though, but I'll try to find this stuff you recommend. I've got a feeling it isn't sold out west, though.

10. We get it at our local Italian markert .....
Cibo e Generi di Conforto
Trinacria - 406 North Paca Street, Baltimore City. Tel. (410) 685-7285.

This place has been here, in the same storefront, since 1906.

I'm serious about the canola oil. Stay away from it. Studies have shown it to be one of the worst triggers out there.

20. Very interesting -- H2S just had a bad experience with it...
I don't know if he mentioned it here, but we tried some jarred pesto sauce, of the Costco Kirkland brand. We've liked all the Kirkland things we've tried before.

It seemed extra oily somehow. H2S said the oil tasted "cloying." I reminded him that he freely douses everything with way more olive oil that I like, so I was surprised he was complaining! It tasted olive-ish to me.

Pretty soon, he was sick with heartburn. I insisted the stuff had to be pretty much the same ingredients we use when we make it from scratch, but then I checked the jar -- sure enough, it had olive oil but also canola oil. Didn't bother me, but poor H2S was miserable the rest of the night. :(

I'm going to have to go check the mayo jar (Best Foods) to see if it contains canola oil. My worst heartburn comes from mayo. Guaranteed.

27. here's one that will surprise you
I was talking to my dad and he told me that when he started eating apples regularly, all his heartburn and acid problems went away. He keeps up with the apples every day and has no, repeat no, problems.

So I tried it myself and it works! Just a small apple in the a.m. and if you like, one at night.

There's actually an apple 3 x a day diet out there.

A side benefit of regular apple eating is that they discourage cancer, especially prostate cancer.

Google "apples digestion" and see what you turn up.

That's very interesting about the canola oil. I didn't know about it.

At any rate, I've been reading about the use of antacids and many sources say not to use them on a regular basis. If the stomach is acidic, there's a reason and a natural balanace needs to be sought. This can be done by experimenting and staying away from the offending foods, as many have evidently done on this thread.

What are the consequences of long-term antacid use? I'm not sure about the credibility of the source, but cancer is one of them.

Cher

available in health food stores and even some drug stores. They work well and are natural and don't have the metallic elements found in most antacids.
