Teflon and George Foreman grills. |
|
My hubby loves to cook on the George Foreman, and bacon is easier to cook on the grill, than on the stove. But now the big question. Aren't the George Foreman's sprayed with teflon which is now being banned by the E.P.A.?

1. I've stopped worrying about this stuff |
|
Unless it's actively poisoning me, or going to give me cancer real soon. I used to play with lead fishing sinkers as a kid - 50 years ago, used asbestos wall plugs, smoked dope, cooked with aluminum pans (and still do), use plastic wrap, drink tap water, and eat food cooked sous vide. And I could walk out my front door tomorrow and get knocked down by a bus. The question you have to ask yourself is how many ppm's (Parts Per Million) of Teflon go into your food when you cook on a Foreman grill or use a non stick pan. Then understand what ppm's are in the larger scheme of things and if that amount will REALLY affect you. How lucky do you feel?

2. I'd worry about it only under two circumstances ..... |
|
If you have birds as pets .... or when the teflon starts to chip off.
Other than that .... don't worry about it.

3. Teflon isn't being banned by the EPA -- just a chemical that's used in its |
|
manufacture (and even that hasn't been "banned" yet -- they're just discussing it).
And I suspect, even if that chemical does get banned, DuPont would find a way around it. And, in any case, use of existing teflon would remain legal, I'd imagine. But a Foreman grill does have teflon. If you have pet birds, be careful (although a Foreman is unlikely to get hot enough to be dangerous to hurt birds).
