My probe thermometer has gone bonkers.
It thinks it is -7 degrees F.

Battery is brand new (now).

Sigh... off to email Polder. No manual online.

1. This is why I like the analog ones
plus you can see the temp curve as it gets closer to the end temp

2. Not too many large print ones, though....
As my eyes get worse (for now, just the myopia, but eventually the glaucoma will catch up with me) I find that large print is easier to deal with in the kitchen. I still do fine with reading recipes and books, but for things I need to look at quickly, it's got to be big.

I'm too young to be this old!!

3. Yeah, I've got the same difficulty...

With the old-style meat thermometers, I either had to pull the rack way out and bend down close to read it, or take whatever it was out of the oven to read it... There were a couple of times when my reading glasses steamed up!

With the digital probe type that I have now, it's so easy. I don't even have to open up the oven door, because the probe can stay in and the read-out can stay on top of the stove. It's great. I find it's easier to cook things, like roasts, just right, too, because I can be right on top of my target temperature; there's no guessing at all.

And I got mine at a garage sale for a buck!!!

Have you tried sticking the probe into a container of very hot water? Maybe there's just some sort of temporary glitch, and that would get it back to where it's supposed to be.

4. The neurotic thermometer has been replaced.
This one has a 10 year warranty. I stapled the receipt to the warranty card and put both in a baggie in the kitchen drawer.

If this one dies, it's going back.

5. What did you get, politicat?

I've seen some super-hi-tech ones, that have alarms that go off when the target temp is reached, and that have two read outs, one for the food's internal temperature and another for the oven's. There are even some with a remote! Mine's pretty basic, but it's all I really need.

Did you splurge? :dilemma:

6. No splurge.
Replaced with a Pyrex.

9.99 at the Hardware store if the Gods.

Maybe next year I'll splurge, or after I get our tax refund( which will require me to actually do our taxes.... *sigh*) but this works for now.

The neurotic one is fabulous as a prick test for cakes and banana bread, though, and I don't have to feel guilty about "wasting" toothpicks! (Yeah, I'm neurotic, too.)
