Have guests write their name on a quart-size Ziploc freezer bag with
permanent marker. Crack 2 eggs (large or extra-large) into the bag (not more
than
2) shake to combine them. Put out a variety of ingredients such as:
cheeses, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc. Each
guest adds prepared ingredients of choice to their bag and shake. Make sure
to get the air out of the bag and zip it up.

Place the bags into rolling, boiling water for exactly 13 minutes. You can
usually cook 6-8 omelets in a large pot. For more, make another pot of
boiling water.

Open the bags and the omelet will roll out easily. Be prepared for everyone
to be amazed.

Nice to serve with fresh fruit and coffee cake; everyone gets involved in
the process and a great conversation piece.

Imagine having these ready the night before, and putting the bag in boiling
water while you get ready. And in 13 minutes, you got a nice omelette for a
quick breakfast!!!

3. but no Maillard reaction, either....
I'd like to try side-by-side taste tests with and without a turn in a hot skillet-- I'll bet the flavor isn't quite the same without some light browning.

4. I think it might take more energy to do this than to make 'em directly.
It takes FOR EFFING EVER to boil a pan of water up here.

Wonder if you can nuke 'em the same way?

(I told Mr. P the recipe and he laughed. Said that some MREs used to come with an egg substance, and if you hoarded the right ingredients, you could make an MRE desert omelet the same way.)

"a great conversation piece"?

I could see doing it for a girls' slumber party.

6. They are great for camping.
We make them for our Girl Scout troop whenever we have an overnighter.

If you cook them in a pot over an open fire you need to roll the bag w/ the omelette in it up tightly and put in another Ziploc. You can fit a few in the second bag so it will save some room.

I recommend the second bag over a hot flame. We've noticed from experience that sometimes the first bag will burst.

8. Thanks for the tip. When I saw this, camping was the first thing
that popped into my mind. I will definitely have to try this.

No microwave when camping up in the mountains. But I can boil water!

11. My first thought: "What an environmental disaster".
And then I thought, "Sure would be quick and handy, though, espeically when entertaining many."
