OK you guys HELP! need a cheap silverware storage idea
Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 09:18 PM by AZDemDist6
here's the deal in the new kitchen (which is gonna be great BTW)

I have 4 drawers, count em FOUR! all are narrow and deep and while they hold my cooking utensils ok now that I have a couple bins on the counter they are woefully inadequate for silverware storage

i have my silverware on the counter in their "organizer" thingie covered with a napkin cuz with the construction going on and the workers in and out a million times a day the flies are ghastly!

anyway, I need a way to store silverware OFF the counter that will (hopefully) keep the flies off, be handy for daily use and won't take up a ton of space or a fistfull of $$$

I do have several upper cabinets I can hang something under, but I've been scouring the web for a unit and haven't found anything

suggestions??

PS I'll have pics in a couple days, promise! and i'll write a long post on the whole bloody saga (and it got ugly, trust me) but with the nice folks here, we're in and getting close to having a fairly nice place to live

2. thanks GG!
:hi:

I'da been on earlier, but the internet guy didn't tell us there was a "pause" button on the modem and we kept forgetting to call them everyday until it was too late. we must have hit it at some point while moving it around getting the desk set up

the 'net's been hooked up since last Thursday (a week ago) and we didn't get it figured out til today with all the chaos around here LOL

but we're here, safe and sound and with 2/3 of the boxes unpacked everything seems to have survived the move :woohoo:

4. I'm thinking a divided wooden silverware tray
suspending it from the bottom of the cabinet so it either folds back and forth on a jointed metal strap or is on side pieces with drawer hardware so it rolls out and back is the question.

I know this is clear as mud but it's late and I'm not up to doing drawings.

My own day to day stock is in a cut crystal mini vase. I don't find a problem with flies when I can keep the door closed.

This would be nice enough to stay out on the counter.

6. more...
You could build this yourself since nobody seems to actually make it.. and it looks super easy.

I dunno what your cabinet space is like, but this could work:

They have alot of different shapes and sizes...

Or maybe something like this with a silverware tray that slides in?

Good luck!

8. If you have space, try one of those "lingerie chests" or...
...whatever they're called, from a home furnishing store. They're not large, they don't take up much floor space, you can tuck into smaller spots and the small drawers would work for silver, kitchen linens, utensils and other suchlike items.

helpfully,
Bright

10. Welcome back!
You've gotten some great ideas. I would have told you to toss them into a shoe box and leave it on the counter! Well, as a temporary fix.

I'm sorry that you have to deal with dirt. Some people have no pride at all. Hmmm.... See you later - I should go run a dust mop under the bed!

15. I'm looking forward to your pics, too
Yeah, it was just some dust bunnies. But I hadn't visited that nest in over a week. Makes me wonder in horror how much the rugs used to hold on to back before we got the vinyl flooring.

11. I'd go with a caddy style device
similar to this concept:

http://www.amazon.com/J.A.-Henckels-Mahogany/dp/B0001GBMFK/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_k2a_2_txt/102-6977483-4712912?ie=UTF8

or this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4431355653&category=46283

I'd probably get one made from coated wire (or sturdy plastic) though, so I could just use it to put washed pieces directly into while still wet...

17. At first that one really caught my eye too
and then I started thinking about logistics -- I have this *thing* where I need to wash my cutting boards over the sink -- it's not enough to just wipe them down (good thing I don't have a butcher block island or anything like that!). I just don't feel they're "clean" unless I can run water over them.

So, I was thinking of the one with the drawer, how would that work? It'd end up driving me nuts.

But for normal people, it's probably a very cool item!

19. Or even just use those flexible plastic cutting board things
on top of it (that's usually what I end up doing, even on top of my wooden cutting board) -- they're so much easier to wash.

23. Container Store is your friend. They sell a set of plastic strip
dividers with little interlocking joints that you can cut and fit to your own specs, for the silverware you actually have, with little rubbery mats to line the drawer with. Very inexpensive.

You buy the strips in either 1" or 2" heights, and they come in long pieces. Then you arrange the silverware so it all fits then cut and join the pieces around the silver.
