Found something interesting at Longs Drugs yesterday
http://www.zergut.com/zergut_dips_sauces_pastes.htm

I can't find the exact product at the website. It was "mild akjar" or something. A spread of roasted red peppers with the tiniest kick of hot pepper. It tastes very good! I have some cooking with homegrown yellow bell pepper, homegrown tomatoes, onions, garlic, thyme, basil, white wine and crab broth right now. Later I'll drop in some scallops and squid rings and cook briefly. Hoping to make a nice fish stew.

I'll bet the spread, heated with some cream would make a great pasta sauce.

1. that sounds excellent and for the sauce, how about mixing it with
cream cheese for a bread or cracker spread?

I've used the Zergut akjar(or is it ajvar?) in seafood stews. It was very good.

5. That's it
I was too lazy to get the jar and read the label.

It really made that stew. I hadn't roasted my bell peppers (a real D-OH! moment there). The ajvar added that lovely flavor.

Re: addictive. I've already planned another trip to Longs to get more of it. It was one of their specials, not a regular item. If I can't get it there, I'm going to have to order a case off the internet.

8. Long's is where I buy it.
The flagship store on N. California Blvd in WC has had it for at least two years. If you're ever in the area you might want to browse there because they stock an unusual assortment of food items including a shelf of Hawaiian staples. I think it's a test market location for the chain. There are other merchandising items in that location that I've not seen at other stores.

I've used the ajvar mixed with sour cream as a dip for artichokes or other veggies and in a tomato-less pasta sauce with Italian sausage.

11. Thanks
That sounds like fun. I love seeing what Longs has in the specials aisle. Our Longs at Rockridge in Oakland is pretty big, too.

Serbo/Croatia. It's a condiment usually served with things like Cevapcici, which are small "sausages" grilled over smoking charcoal. DEEEEEEEEEE-LISH!!!:headbang:

Maybe I'll check and see if they sell the sausages, too. I wonder if they sell samplers. That's it. I'm hooked.
