Peppers "Tennessee Cheese"
I picked up some of these red ones the other day. The market called them Pimiento Peppers. But I think they're the Tennessee Cheese variety. I'm using them in some macaroni salad today since I got the smallest in the bin. I'm going to go back and to get some larger ones for stuffing. The flesh is dark and quite thick. These are the sweetest, robust peppers I've ever tasted.

"(82 days) An ancient heirloom recovered from seeds donated by a couple living in Kingston, Tennessee. Originally from Spain, where it is still used as a staple in many dishes. Fruits are perhaps the best we've seen for stuffing. Round, apple or tomato-shaped, with a flattened base and a thick, delicious skin. Use it fresh like a bell, pickled, canned, or dried for paprika!"

1. They're probably related.
A pepper like that with origins in Spain, chances are good.We grow a paprika pepper that looks like that Tennessee Cheese.

The little thick walled peppers often pack a lot more flavor than the standard bells.
Happy eating!

2. Shoot
I tried to grow some from seed. No luck. I ended up buying the California Wonders at the garden center. Maybe next year I'll buy starts from Territorial Seeds. www.territorialseed.com

3. Bang!
(you asked for it:D )

I buy specialty pepper plants from Territorial because it is much easier than starting them from seed. The Golden Bell has a wonderful flavor. Last year I grew the miniature chocolate bell. It produced early and often and the peppers were slightly sweet and very crisp. This year I opted for the Purple Beauty instead, but I don't think I'll get it again. Maybe a Tennessee Cheese next year....

4. I've gotten some purple peppers at the market
They don't have the flavor punch of a sweet red pepper. But I get one or two for salads since I figure it's good to vary our diet by color. Different minerals is a good thing.

Whatever these little reds are called, they have a thick flesh and a lot of flavor. I'm tempted to get some plants next year now that I know where to get them from! :D

6. The shipping is expensive
I wanted to try nine different types of peppers this year but didn't want to pay the shipping. I had no idea it was so hard to start peppers from seeds. Next year, I'll get the garden center starts and buy a few speciall peppers from Territorial.
